Yes, Gary was a very bright, well-read, witty and a generous, caring, kind man. He was a dear friend since childhood at Ellis School. He unselfishly cared for his family members and he worked very hard to provide for them and others. I had the privilege to have shared many good times with Gary and only wish now that we had stayed in touch over the past few years. We are very saddened to learn of his sudden passing.

We will miss him very much and trust that his family will be comforted during this time of loss with the many wonderful memories of Gary.

My wife Ann Jauquet joins me in extending our sincere condolences to Tom and Bob, family members and friends.

Sincerely,

Bruce Hendrickson

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that you find comfort and happiness in knowing that Gary has touched the lives and hearts of so many others. A willing hand, an active mind,

Anxious to please, loath to offend,

A loving brother and faithful friend.”

From Jim Nelson, on Friday March 5, 2010

Dear Bill, Ann, Tony, Michelle, Jennifer and and extended family

I send my condolenses. It has been many years sinse I have seen you all. However, there isn’t too many days that go by that I don’t stop to think about all the good times “we boys” had growing up together. No doubt we made the most of it. It seems as I watch my own kids grow up, it sparks many memories of when Craig, Tony, Kenny, and I hung out and did the same things. I have a lot of fond memories of Craig. The kind of memories that last a lifetime. I often felt that I owed Craig some of my success in wrestling. He was good at organizing all them backyard wrestling matches, boxing contests, apple wars, smear the queer games, and boys being boys fist fights. All those backyard endeavors turned us all into a bunch of tough fellows. Craig was always the “bravest” and most “gutsy” of us all. I always admired his courage. When we climbed trees, it was always him that climbed the highest. When the ice left the bay, it was always him that took the first plunge into the frigid, icy, cold waters of Lake Superior. When someone made a dare, it was always him that said, “I’ll do it without question”.

Craig also had a great sense of humor and he always made us laugh our heads off with his jokes and pranks or whatever he could think off.

There are endless stories I could tell you about Craig and the rest of us boys growing up together, but it would surely take a novel or a box office hit movie to tell it all. Some of the stories you might only imagine and some you wouldn’t believe. Some of them stories are classical and hilarious while some are darn right and rather ornery. No doubt though, we were just boys testing the waters and always seeking adventure. In the long run, we never did anyone any harm. We were merely just a little mischevious.

Another great attibute I admired about Criag was his genuine friendship. Craig was always inviting. That is, he always made you feel welcomed. He had a distinct charisma and charm about him like no other person.

I wish I could have been there in person to pay final respects to Craig. He will be missed in person but not in memory. When I think back and reflect on Craig, I will always have a smile on my face. He will be remembered for his fun personality, charm, and free spirited courage.

I wish you all comfort in your time of sorrow. God bless you all.

I hope that his kids and you will someday find comfort in all the happy memories I’m sure Craig gave you. He was a wonderful guy and classmate and I hope the best for all of you. Burnell ‘Gil’ Gilbertson

From Jay Christensen, on Friday, December 16, 2011

Gil was a wonderful man and best friend of my father, Ed Christensen. Although my dad and mother settled in Iowa, we would stop over and see Gil, Genevieve and Amy each time we traveled to Ashland.

I’ll never forget a fishing trip that Gil, my father and I took to the mouth of the Bad River during my teenage years. We planned to spend the night fishing, but didn’t anticipate what would happen next. The area was hit with a series of ferocious thunderstorms and we never wet a line. Instead, we were the ones who got wet. Soaked, actually. It was simply too dangerous to attempt a return to Odanah in such conditions.

As soon as daybreak arrived, we fired up the outboard and worked our way back up the river to the launch area at Odanah. That trip was rather treacherous because of all of the logs that had been washed into the river. But we made it and for years to come, the story of that night would be told. Mother Nature had the first laugh, but we had the last laugh. Many of them, actually.

I was fortunate to see Gil twice last year with my father on trips we made to Ashland and Washburn. It was great to see him, as I had not been to the area for 30 years. Gil still had that vice-grip handshake.

And yes, we talked — and laughed — about that night at the mouth of the Bad River.

From Mike and Pat Stolsky, on Thursday, January 28, 2010

Sorry to hear about your loss.

-

From Tom and Ruth Green, on Friday, January 29, 2010

You are all in our prayers and thoughts.

We have all been blessed to have Rick touch our lives.

He has taught us the patience of Job. The grace of accepting God’s will, at every turn in life, without complaint or question. He taught us well in putting others first, even ahead of his own sufferings. He has taught us well in actually living Christianity rather than just being a Christian in name.

Yes, we have been blessed to have him in our lives.

Now, Rick is with his parents and enjoying the rewards of heaven which he truly deserves for his very fine extraordinary stewardship of God’s gifts of Life, Love, Faith, and Hope.

And, Rick will continiue to teach us how to live a true Christ like life as God and all of His angels and His saints and all souls in heaven answer our daily prayers.

We were blessed to have Rick in our lives on this earth and now blessed to have him pulling for us in heaven!

Love, Prayers, Peace, Tom and Ruth

From Kathy and Neil Adler, on Friday, January 29, 2010

It was an honor to know your father. He was a great man. Of all he did with the Special Olympics, and the fishing we did, the baseball game against my Boy Scouts, He will forever be in my heart. You are all in our thoughts and prayers in this time of sorrow, but remember, we will all see him again some day. Our deepest sympathy, Kathy and Neil Adler.

-

From tom green, on Monday, February 1, 2010

We were all blessed to have had Ricky with us and to touch our lives.

Not only was he always fun to be around, he also taught us valuable lessons of how to live a true Christian life. he taught us true love. Loving all who he had met and loving others more than himself. He taught us true Faith. Having faith in God through all of his life events. He taught us Hope. He always hoped for the best for all of God’s creation. He put his trust in God to provide for only good for His Creation. And, he always put the thoughts and feelings of others before his own. He had the patience of Job. Accepting the “crosses” given to him, he did not waiver in his Love and Faith in God and in others.

Yes, we can all thank God that Rick touched our lives. And, now Rick is in heaven with his parents. We can rest assurred that he, along with the legions of Angels ,of which he is one, is ready to help us even more as God answers our prayers. Love, Prayers, Peace, Tom and Ruth –

My sincere sympathy in the loss of your dear Mother, Millie. I always enjoyed my yearly visits with her in the fall of the year and our many telephone and written messages. She truly was a special person who cared so deeply about so many things and people. I believe that her last wriiten note to me on July 28th told me that she did not expect to see me again. I guess we just know when it is our time “to go home.” Peace

To all the family members of Shirley M. Huybrecht. My heart aches for all the cherished family members whom Shirley loved. I know you will all miss her very much. I know the pain it causes when our mother dies…it is severe. I pray for God to comfort each person who loved Shirley, to give you peace, and help you through this time of grieving, missing, and leaving. I was told to let go and let God. May she be resting in God’s loving arms.

To the family of Bertha Louise Hyde. I so wish I could be there with all of you today, but I have to be at work. Bertha was such a good friend to my mom, Jennie Olson. I really have know story to tell, other than I remember as a young girl playing with Yvonne & Christine and seeing Bertha and Harold up “the hill” at your Grandma Sarah who was also my nothers good friend. Bertha was always so special and had a snile and a kind word for everyone and anyone. I saw she and Harold a few weeks ago and she mention how she missed Jennie. Bertha will be dearly missed.
