     Mabel Virginia Valeske, age 99, of Mellen, Wisconsin, died Monday, February 2, 2009, at the Mellen Manor Nursing Home in Mellen.
     Mabel was born, on October 5, 1909, in Fayette County, Indiana, the only child of Edward and Bertha Catherine (Hopwood) Tate. She and Alvin E. Valeske were united in marriage, in Indiana, on October 12, 1929. This housewife enjoyed painting, and was a member of the Eastern Star and the Auxiliary of Copper Falls VFW Post #2273, of Mellen.
     Mabel is survived by: her son, Wayne Valeske, of Broomfield, Colorado; her daughter Faith Oh and her husband, Dongho, of Golden, Colorado; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by: her husband, Alvin E. Valeske (on November 20, 1970); her son, Gary Valeske; and her parents, Edward and Bertha Tate.
     A gathering, for family and friends, at the Congregational United Church of Chirst, in Mellen, will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2009, and continue until the hour of the service.
     Memorial Services, for Mabel Valeske, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 6, 2009, at the Congregation United Church of Christ, in Mellen. Reverend James Imse will officiate.
     Interment, in the Mellen Union Cemetery, will held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2009.

     Merle L. ‘Van’ Van Cleve, age 88, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.
     Van was born, on March 12, 1922, in Ocheyedan, Iowa, the son of F. Herman and Marie (Geronsin) Van Cleve. He was a U.S. Navy, WWII, veteran serving in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On June 30, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bessie Brooks, at Mankato, Minnesota. He was a Golden Glove boxer, during the Depression, boxed professionally for two years, and graduated from Mankato State Teachers College, with a degree in health and physical education. After teaching high school health, physical education and English, for two years, he became a sales manager for Alcoa, the makers of Wear-Ever cookware, moving to Des Moines, Iowa, and retiring, in 1990, after 42 years with the company. Van never met a stranger, and counted many long-time friends as members of his extended family. He and Bess moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1998.  He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, a member and supporter of the Des Moines YMCA, and was very active in the Lions Club, in both Des Moines and Bella Vista.  Van played tennis and golf into his early 80’s.
     Survivors include: his sons, Jerry (Monica), of Ashland; Jim (Claudia Strauss), of Claremont, California; Tom (Estella), of Tucson, Arizona; and Bill, of Ankeny, Iowa; seven grandchildren; one brother, Roger, of Des Moines, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Bess, on FebruARY 22, 2008; four brothers; and one sister.
     A Memorial Service for Van will take place, in Bella Vista, Arkansas, at a later date. Memorials may be made to YMCA of Greater Des Moines, 101 Locust Street, Des Moines, Iowa, 50313 (www.dmymca.org).

     Carol J. Van Vlack, age 78, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2010, in her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. 
     Carol was born on May 10, 1931, in Ashland, the daughter of John and Julia (Kalen) Zembrycki. She and Edwin L. Van Vlack, Jr. werer united in marriage, in Washburn, Wisconsin, on August 5, 1967. She cooked at Monk’s Bowling Lane’s and worked at the Union National Bank, in Ashland, before becoming an assistant fiscal officer for NWCEP, in Ashland. A position she held for over 35 years. She retired on January 1, 2010. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, fishing, taking casino trips and car rides.
     Survivors include: her daughters: Sandra (Curtis) Castle of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Lisa (Michael) Sturgal of Ashland; her son, Mike Van Vlack of Ashland; and grandsons: Steven (Lee) Castle; Jeffrey (Janeen) Castle; James Sturgal; and Tyler Van Vlack.  Carol is also survived by: her great-grandchildren: Bradly, Sophia and Hailee Castle; her brother, Jerry (Sharon) Zembrycki, of Plover, Wisconsin; her sisters: Jeanie Ylitalo of Sanborn, Wisconsin; Jackie Zembrycki of Louisville, Colorado; and June (Bob) Belsky of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Edwin, on May 6, 2008; and two sisters: Joanie and Joyce.
     A visitation, for family and friends will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. It will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 26, 2010, and continue until the hour of service.
     A Funeral Service, for Carol, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 26, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. Father Walter Dolan, O.F.M., will officiate. Casket bearers will include: Steven Castle, Jeffrey Castle, Curtis Castle, Michael Sturgal, Jerry Zembrycki and Bradly Castle.
     Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, will follow the funeral service.

     Edwin L. Van Vlack, Jr., age 86, of 215 Stuntz Avenue, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.
     Ed was born, on February 12, 1922, in Ashland, the son of Edwin L., Sr. and Ida C. (Kirkman) VanVlack. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran. He and Carol J. (Kalen) Cliff were united in marriage, on August 5, 1967, in Washburn, Wisconsin. He owned and operated Ed’s Safari Bar, on Main Street, in Ashland, for 48 years. He enjoyed his work, as a bartender, and the many friends he made over the years because of it. He was an avid sports fan (especially watching the Packers) and as a pastime, enjoyed playing the lottery.
     Survivors include: Carol, his wife of 40 years; their two daughters: Sandra Castle and her husband, Curtis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Lisa Sturgal and her husband, Michael, of Ashland; and their son, Mike VanVlack, of Ashland. He is also survived by: four grandsons: Steven Castle and his wife, Lee; Jeffrey Castle and his wife, Janeen; James Sturgal and Tyler VanVlack; three great grandchildren: Bradly Castle, Sophia Castle and Hailee Castle; his sister, Virginia Burns, of Ashland; numerous nieces and Nephews.
     Ed was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers: Sherman, Fred, Keith and Tom; and five sisters: Florence, Catherine, Veronica, Betty Ann and Bonnie.
     A visitation, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2008, and continue until the hour of the service.
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Henry V. Willenborg, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. The casket bearers will include: Jeffrey Castle, Michael Sturgal, Peter Warren, Curtis Castle, Steven Castle and Will Keyes.
     Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, will follow the Mass. Military honors will be provided by the United Chequamegon Area Veterans, of Ashland.

     Shirley A. Vernon, age 68, of 27190 Cherryville Road, Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, Wisconsin.
     Shirley was born, on April 3, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of George and Dallas (Bushey) Amrein. She and Wayne R. Vernon were united in marriage, in Washbury, on July 25, 1970.
     She considered herself a homemaker, but also worked as: a nurses aid, at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland and the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn; and the bookkeeper at Vernon Construction, working with her husband, Wayne.
     Survivors include: Wayne, her husband of 39 years, of Ashland; her sister, Patsy Pappas and her husband, Peter, of Washburn; and three brothers: John Amrein and his wife, Ruth, of Washburn; Timothy Amrein and his wife, Nancy, of Washburn and Michael Amrein and his wife, Sherri, of Bayfield, Wisconsin. Shirley is also survived by: two special nieces and a special nephew: Jodi Nygard and her husband, Ben; Hollie Lawrence and her husband, Brad; and Joe Amrein and his wife, Heather; as well as many other nieces and nephews; great-nephews, Beau and Cole Amrein and her canine companion, Buddy.
     She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara.
     A private memorial service, for family and close friends, will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 20, 2009, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. Father Henry Willenborg, O.F.M. will officiate.
     Her interment will be private.

     Jean A. Vernoski, age 74 of Mellen, Wisconsin, died Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Mellen Manor Nursing Home, in Mellen.
     Jean was born, July 17, 1934, in Gordon, Wisconsin, the daughter of Anthony and Ida (Flink) White. She worked as a nurse’s aid in Michigan. She also worked at the Atcherson Hotel in Mellen. She and John W. Vernoski were united in marriage, on July 27, 1957. A homemaker, Jean enjoyed cooking and baking.  She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen.
     Survivors include: her five sons, John Vernoski and his wife, Toni; Paul Vernoski and his wife, Sheryl; Hugh Vernoski and his wife, Tina; Jeff Vernoski and Michael Vernoski, all of Mellen; and three daughters, Linda Jones, Mary Keyzers and her husband, Mike and Rose Maples and her husband, Bruce, all of Shelton, Washington. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard White of Ironwood, Michigan; three sisters: Florence Schaefer and her husband, Del, of Thorp, Wisconsin; Jane Pemper, of Mellen and Judy Lawver and her husband, Leo, of Ashland, Wisconsin.
     Jean was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, John (January 29, 1975); five brothers: Floyd White, Melvin White, Carl White, Tony White, Jr. and Donald White and one sister, Bernice Bay.
     Inurnment, in the Greenwood Cemetery, Morse, Wisconsin, will occur on a day and at a time that have yet to be determined.

     Rose M. Vranes, age 93, of Ashland, Wisconsin, formerly of Iron River, Wisconsin, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Golden Living Center - Court Manor, in Ashland.
     Rose was born, on November 17, 1916, in Iron River, the daughter of George and Blanche (Coats) Armbruster. She graduated from Iron River High School and moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where she worked. During World War II, she was employed at the Boeing Aircraft Plant, in Seattle, Washington. After the War, she returned to Duluth, where she worked, for many years, at the Marshall Wells Department Store and the Spaulding Hotel.
     In 1967, she and Nick Vranes were united in marriage, in Duluth. They made their home in Iron River and wintered in Zephyrhills, Florida.
     Rose was a member of the Saint Michael Catholic Church, in Iron River, and the Church Altar Society.
     Rose is survived by her sister, Karen Wicklund, of Iron River; nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by: her husband, Nick, on February 24, 1992; her parents, George and Blanche Armbruster; four brothers: Thomas Armbruster, George R. Armbruster, Jr., Alva ‘Bud’ Armbruster, and Robert Armbruster; and four sisters: Ahlene Connors, Delphine LaCrosse, Audrey Granlund, and Darlene Lundeen.
     A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Saint Michael Catholic Church, in Iron River, beginning at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2010, and continuing until the hour of the service.
     A Mass of Christian Burial, for Rose, will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at the Saint Michael Catholic Church, in Iron River. Father Michael Crisp will be the Celebrant. Casket bearers will include: Lee Ruska, John LaGesse, Peter Granlund, and Bruce Granlund. Interment, in the Iron River Cemetery, Iron River, will follow the Mass.

     David L. Waddle, age 55, of Mellen, Wisconsin, passed into his new life on Friday, August 21, 2009, in his home.
     David was born, on September 11, 1953, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the son of Walter and Helen (Justice) Waddle. He was raised in the Highbridge, Wisconsin, area until the third grade, when he moved, with his family, to the southern part of the state, near Bassett. During his junior year of high school, the family  moved back to Mellen where David graduated with the class of 1971. He and Jean M. Mesko were united in marriage, in Mellen, on August 16, 1975. They moved back to the southern part of the state where he worked for Mercury Marine, for over 30 years. In 2003 he moved back to Mellen and opened the Penokee Mountain Deli and Sausage Company, with his wife Jean. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing but the apples of his eye were his sons and grandchildren, whom he loved very much.
     Survivors include: his wife, Jean of Mellen; and their two sons: Nathan Waddle and his wife, Susan; and Adam; all of Mellen; two grandchildren: Jerid and Katie; three sisters, Betty Stilin and her husband, LeRoy Ferris; Eileen Wiener and her husband, Fred; and Dee Jamieson and her husband, Dave; all of Mellen; numerous nieces and nephews.
     Davie was preceded in death by: his parents and an infant sister, Arlene.
     A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, August 24, 2009, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen and will feature a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. The visitation will resume at 10 a.m., Tuesday, and continue until the hour of service.
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen. Father Michael McLain will be the celebrant. The casket bearers will include: Dale Kokko, John Windt, Dave Wickstrom, Joe Warren, Gary Wojtalewicz and Randy Whitman.
     Private interment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery, Highbridge, Wisconsin, on a day and at a time that have yet to be detemined.

     Clayton Andrew Wallin Jr., age 63, of Altoona, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2010, at Luther Hospital, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was born, on March 12, 1947, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the son of Clayton Wallin and Frances (Prestil) Sharron.
     Clayton was raised in Ashland, graduating from DePadua High School in 1965, and received his bachelor’s degree, in business administration, from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, in 1971. He was employed in various banking and lending positions throughout his life.
     Clayton lived most of his life in Altoona, where he loved playing softball, for many years, as well as watching his sons grow up playing sports, especially baseball and hockey. He was an avid Packers and Brewers fan and enjoyed beating anyone he could at cribbage. He also enjoyed being an active member of the Altoona Lions Club. He is survived by: his mother, Frances Sharron, of Ashland; two sons: Brian (Michele) Wallin, of Moorpark, California; and Andrew Wallin, of Altoona; and his son, Landon Wallin; two sisters: MaryKaye (Jim) Sergent, of Eagle River, Wisconsin; and Barbara (Gary) Johnson, of Wausau, Wisconsin; many aunts, nieces, nephews, and other relatives; the mother of his children, Nancy Wallin, of Altoona; and many longtime friends.
     Clayton was preceded in death by: his father, Clayton Wallin, Sr.; his stepfather, Kenneth Sharron; and a son, Adam Wallin.
     A memorial gathering was held Monday, Aug. 9, at Stokes, Prock and Mundt Funeral Chapel in Altoona, officiated by Father Joseph Redfern.
     A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2010, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Fr. Paul Pare, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, in Ashland. Friends may call, one hour prior to the Mass, at the Church.
     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church or Our Lady of the Lake School, Ashland.

     Emil F. Wanatka, Jr., age 83, of 610 W. Club House Road, Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at the SMDC Medical Center, in Duluth, Minnesota.
     Emil was born, on October 11, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Emil and Nancy (LaPorte) Wanatka. He served in the U.S. Army, during World War II. He owned and operated the Little Bohemia Lodge, in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin, for many years.
     A celebration of Emil’s life will take place, from 2 to 4 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2009, at his home, in Ashland.
     A memorial service, for Emil, will be held, at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 13, 2009, at the Manitowish Waters Community Presbyterian Church, in Manitowish Waters. A reception, at the Little Bohemia Lodge, will follow the service.
     Memorials are preferred, in lieu of flowers, to the Dialysis Center, in Ashland.

     Irene C. Warren, age 96, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2010, at the Golden Living Center-Court Manor, in Ashland.
     Irene was born, on April 4, 1914, in Glidden, Wisconsin, the daughter of Robert M. and Ottila (Rominsky) Quinn. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1933. She and Norman A. Warren were united in marriage, in Carlton, Minnestoa, on Oct 22, 1934. Irene was a homemaker and a charter member of the Ashland Garden Club, and for many years, participated in their holiday green show. She was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge. In 1971 she was the chairwoman for the Elks Lodge Landscaping Project. Irene was a member of: the Ashland Monday Club, the Ashland Historical Society, the Garland City Chatty Red Hatties and was the chairwoman for the Ashland County Cancer Crusade. She was a former member of the Lake Shore Art Association and was herself an artist of oil and water colors. She was very active in helping her husband Norman with Boy Scouts and Kiwanis Club activities. She enjoyed alpine and cross country skiing and playing golf.
     Survivors include: her son, Bruce (Sylvia) Warren, of Janesville, Wisconsin; two step-great-grandchildren: Terrie and Toni; three step great great-grandchildren; her sister, Della M. Sassa of Morehead, North Carolina; a very special niece, Carol (James) Schraufnagel, of Ashland; nieces, nephews and cousins.
     Irene was preceded in death by: her husband, Norman, on October 15, 2000; her parents; her sister, Ellen Schraufnagel; and three brothers: Earl, Thomas and James; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Quinn.
     A gathering, for family and friends, will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, and continue until the hour of service.
     A Memorial Service, for Irene, will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. Father Gary Bernhardt, O.F.M. will officiate. The Eulogist will be Leana Schraufnagel.
     Interment, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Ashland, will take place at 1 p.m., Monday, August 9, 2010.

     Eleanor M. Washnieski, age 82, of Ino, Wisconsin, died peacefully in her home, on Saturday, January 9, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. 
     Eleanor was born, on May 17, 1927, in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Josephine (Kristofik) Ziman. She and Frank W. Washnieski were united in marriage, in Dauby, Wisconsin, on May 17, 1947. She worked at the Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland, for over 24 years, and was a member of the Saint Florian Catholic Church, in Ino.
     Eleanor is survived by: her six children: Frank Washnieski  and his wife, Nancy, of Larkspur, Colorado; Fred Washnieski and his wife, Janet; John Washnieski  and his wife, Nancy; Larry Washnieski; and David Washnieski, all of Ino; and Jean Miller and her husband, Robert, of Mason, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Survivors also include: three sisters: Olive Bailen; Joann Griffiths and her husband, Charles, all of Ashland, Wisconsin; and Louise Dobek of Cudahy, Wisconsin; her brother, Paul Ziman and his wife, Nancy, of Ashland; two aunts: Betty Crnkovich, of Granada Hills, California; and Veronica Hanulik, of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania; many nieces, nephews and friends.
     Eleanor was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Frank, on July 1, 1971; their daughter, Judy Washnieski; two sisters, Mary Pavich; and Virginia Kladny; and her brother, John Ziman.
     A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, January 14, 2010, and will feature a 7 p.m. prayer service.
     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, for Eleanor, at 11 a.m., Friday, January 15, 2010, at the Saint Florian Catholic Church, in Ino. Father Michael Crisp will be the celebrant.      Naida Waszkowski, age 92, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at her home, in Ashland.
     Naida was born, on January 29, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mary (Dunbrosky) Komiak. She grew in Chicago and worked as a bookbinder, for a publishing company for many years. She enjoyed reading. Naida and Arthur Waskowski were united in marriage, in Chicago, in February of 1947. They lived in Chicago until after Arthur’s death, in 1995, when Naida moved to Ashland.
     Naida is survived by: her daughter, Rita Barringer and her husband Richard, of Ashland, Wisconsin; three grandchildren: James Peterson of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; Sheryl Wilber and her husband, Robert, of Bartlett, Illinois and Stacey Berringer of Ramsey, Michigan. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Laura Wilber, Justin Wilber; Garion Strasberger and Brittany Strasberger.
     Naida was preceded in death by: her husband, both parents and her brother, John Komiak.

     Lois Ann Watland, age 77, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland.
     Lois was born, on November 20, 1932, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Leslie and Eleanor Christianson. She and LeRoy A. Waltand, were united in marriage, in Minneapolis, on October 18, 1952. They lived in Maple Plain, Minnesota, while she worked at Daytons Department Store, in Minneapolis. Lois and Roy opened the Watland Shoe Store, in Ashland, in 1973, which they operated until retiring, in 2005. Lois enjoyed spending time with her family, living at their home on Eagle Lake and spending the winters in Florida.
     Survivors include: her sons, William A. Watland and his wife, Connie, and LeRoy A. Watland, Jr. and his wife, Karen, all of Ashland; her daughter, Barbara J. Johnson and her husband, Kenneth, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and two grandchildren, Hollie Masanz and her husband, Neil, of Mosinee, Wisconsin and Shawn Watland and his wife, Jessica, of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. She is also survived by: five great-grandchildren, Valarie, Tayler, Wyatt, Skyler and Billy; nieces and nephews.
     Lois was preceded in death by: her husband Leroy (on October 26, 2006), her parents, her brother, Bill Christianson, and her sister-in-law, Marjorie Christianson.

     Wallace Garnett Weister, Sr., age 83 of Mellen, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at North Memorial Hospital, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota,  after complications from quadruple heart by-pass surgery in February.
     Wallace was born, on January 4, 1927, in Morse, Wisconsin, the son of Walter and Frances (Michel) Weister. He spent his earlier years in Morse, where he went to school and worked on the family farm. He moved to Ashland as a teenager.
     He and Mary Carol Hanson were united in marriage, in Mellen, on October 4, 1952. They lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where their five children were raised. In 1966, they moved back to Mellen. Wallace worked as a farm hand and in the woods. Later, he worked at Columbia Forest Products. He was the Chief of Police, in Mellen, and worked as a security guard. He enjoyed spending time with his family and being out at his cabin.
     Survivors include: his three daughters: Frances (Arnie) White, Sheryl (Daniel) Peltonen and Sue (Russell) Karow, all of Mellen; his son, Bruce, of Mellen; ten grandchildren: Shannon, Roxanne, Melanie, Kori, Troy, Valarie, Tawnya, Mindy, Nikki, and Jamie; and 15 great-grandchildren: Courtney, Hailey, Randy, Taylor, Charles, Thane, Madison, Connor, Devon, Preston, Eathan, Ashton, Jaylynn, Jordan, and Logan. Wallace is also survived by: four sisters: Elizabeth Piff, and Ruth Nordin, of Ashland; Elaine DeGarmo, of Florida; and Norita Washieski, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; one brother, Larry Weister, of Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Sandy (Alvin) Otto, of Mellen, and Joann Weister, of Washburn, Wisconsin; four brothers-in-law: Fred and Keith Hanson, of Ashland; Richard (Irene) Hanson, of Mellen; and Wally (Marge) Hanson, of Glidden, Wisconsin; and his special dog and sidekick, Abby.
     Wallace was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary, on June 20, 2007; his son, Wallace, Jr., his parents; two brothers: Jack and Ronald; and his sister, June Boris.

     Donald L. White, age 82, of Mellen, Wisconsin, died Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the Mellen Manor, in Mellen.
     Don was born,
on March 15, 1926, in Morse, Wisconsin, the son of Anthony and Ida (Flink) White. He attended school in Morse. He and Mary L. Lawver were united in marriage, in Glidden, Wisconsin, on February 2, 1949. He was employed at the veneer mill, in Mellen, for over 38 years, and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen.
     Survivors include: his two sons, Leslie White, Sr., of New Richmond, Wisconsin; Brian White and his wife, Amy, of Mellen; five grandchildren: Cody White, Chad White, Travis White, Melissa White and Leslie White, Jr.; ten great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard White, of Ironwood, Michigan; four sisters: Jean Vernoski, of Mellen; Jane Pemper, of Mellen; Florence Schaefer and her husband, Del, of Thorp, Wisconsin; Judy Lawver and her husband, Leo, of Ashland, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

     Leslie D. White, Sr., age 54, of New Richmond, Wisconsin, formerly of Mellen, Wisconsin, died, Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
     Leslie was born, on January 31, 1955, in Morse, Wisconsin, the son of Donald L. and Mary L. (Lawver) White. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was united in marriage to Rachel I. Anderson. He was an automobile mechanic for many years. He enjoyed: motorcycling, hunting, working on cars, cooking and spending time with his family, whom he loved very much.
     Survivors include: his four children: Chad White and his wife, Heather, of Mellen, Wisconsin; Travis White and his wife, Jolene, of New Richmond, Wisconsin; Les White, of New Richmond, Wisconsin and Melissa White of Ashland, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; his brother, Brian White and his wife, Amy, of Mellen, Wisconsin and one nephew, Cody.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers.

     Evelyn F. Windt, age 85, of Mellen, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at the Mellen Manor, in Mellen.
     Evelyn was born, on March 18, 1923, in Cayuga, Wisconsin, the daughter of Roy and Ruth (Babcock) Churchill.She and John J. Windt were united in marriage in February of 1947. A homemaker, she loved to bake and sew.
     Evelyn is survived by her three children: Judy Ludwig and her husband, Frank, of Ashland, Wisconsin; Frances Schermitzler and her husband, Ron, of Neenah, Wisconsin; Chuck Windt and his wife, Geralyn, of Escondido, California. Eight grandchildren also survive: Mike Ludwig, Ryan Ludwig, Wendy Krause, Kari Richter, Tim Ludwig, Jaime Fazica, Brooke Emery and Jillene Patterson. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Tyler Richter, Hailey Richter, Katelyn Ludwig and Madison Ludwig.

She was a member of: Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, the Auxiliary of Chapter 28 of the Disabled American Veterans; Memorial Medical Center Partners and the Ashland Historical Society.
     Survivors include: her son, James K. Winkler, of Saint Anthony Village, Minnesota, other relatives and friends.

     Charles B. ‘Chuck’ Woodward, age 90, of 39385 Kleinsteiber Road, Highbridge, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.
     Charles was born, on July 25, 1918, in Highbridge, Wisconsin, the son of Charles and Harriet (Justice) Woodward. As a young man, he served in the CCC Camps. He and Dorothy M. Schlies were united in marriage, on June 21, 1939.
     Chuck served in the United States Army, during World War II, from 1944 to 1948. As a Third Class Tech Sergeant, he served with the 771st Tank Battalion.
     After the war, he worked in the Ashland area: as a shop foreman at B & M Garage, Bodine’s Marina and Wallie Motor. He retired in 1980.
     He was an avid Ham Radio operator. He also enjoyed the out of doors: hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved his family.
     He was preceded in death by: his wife, Dorothy, with whom he spent 57 wonderful years; his parents, Charles and Harriet; his sister, Fern Larvey and his brother, James Tyndall.
     Chuck is survived by: his daughter, Lynn Broeniman and her husband, David, of Highbridge; three grandchildren: Ryan Broeniman and his wife, Gina, of Mellen, Wisconsin; Kristi Broeniman and her husband, Jody Lutz, of Mellen; Amy Peters and her husband, Corey, of Mellen; two great grandchildren: Kyle Broeniman and Ellie Mae Peters, both of Mellen; many nieces and nephews.

     Lois was born, on September 13, 1945, in Ontonagon, Michigan, the daughter of Robert and Alice (Segal) Liesenfelder.
     She and Gordon E. Wrege were united in marriage, in Silver Bay, Minnesota, on May 26, 1976.
     Lois worked, as a clipper operator, at the Veneer Mill, in Mellen.
     Survivors include: her husband, Gordon, of Mellen, her mother, Alice Liesenfelder; her brother, John Liesenfelder and his wife, Debra, of Glidden, Wisconsin; two sisters: Nancy Gould and her husband, James, of Butternut, Wisconsin; and Alice Romanski and her husband, Rick, of Mukwonago, Wisconsin.

     Kathleen M. ‘Kathy’ Wright, age 61, of Winchester, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2010, in Winchester.
     Kathy was born, on August 7, 1948, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the daughter of Robert and Virginia (Baker) Wright. She was a graduate of Depadua High School, in Ashland, and U.W. Superior.
     Kathy worked for Saltmarsh Insurance Company, in Winchester, for 38 years, and was a member of the Mishawan Choir, in Winchester.
     Kathy is survived by: her mother, Virginia Wright, of Ashland; her four brothers: Paul Wright, of Phoenix, Arizona; James (Cathy) Wright, of Tower, Minnesota; Gerald (Julie O‘Connell) Wright, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; and John ‘Jay’ Wright, of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

     Eleanor Julia Teresa Dmochowski Jablonski Yankee, age 92 of Ashland, WI, passed away Tuesday, Feb 9, 2010 at Ashland, WI.  A native of Riverside, New Jersey, she lived in Ashland after marrying Gerald A. Yankee and returning to his home after the end of his Naval Submarine tour of duty in WWII.
     Eleanor was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Riverside, New Jersey, surviving an era of scarlet fever, epidemics, losing her father to black lung disease from working in the mines when she was 12. She and her sisters all worked in the textile mills helping to support their widowed mother through the Great Depression. She was very proud to have graduated from Saint Casimir School. She was smart, pretty, tough and her loving family worked through terrible working conditions and times. Just before the birth of their first child, tragedy struck and she lost her first husband, Zyguund J. Jablonski, leaving her a young widow with a child to support. Her brother and sisters struggled, with a war escalating, trying to help family back in Poland. She gratefully remembered small acts of kindness during those difficult years. Along the Eastern seaboard, the U.S. Navy was stationed at various ports including Philadelphia. In a wonderful happenstance leading to a marriage and life-long romance, Eleanor met and married U.S. Navy Submarine sailor, Gerald Yankee. After the war, with two children, they moved first to the Yankee family farm and then worked as a team in the family business, Yankee Plumbing and Heating until retirement when they enjoyed traveling together through-out the United States and Europe. Eleanor had many talents: she crocheted beautiful, delicate doilies, linens and afghans, always dressed like a million bucks, was a good swimmer, played many card games extremely well, was excellent in cooking traditional Polish meals, breads and soups, made unique, delicious desserts, loved to laugh, play paddy-cake, paddy-cake with her children to her great, great grandchildren, smooched her husband, loved hugs from her family, enjoyed hot summer heat and picnics, read zillions of romance novels, didn’t care if she sang off key, was stubborn, out spoken and grateful. 
     Eleanor is survived by her children: Zygmund (Jean) Jablonski, Sr., of Ashland; Lorna (Frank) Hernandez of Racine, Wisconsin; Paula (Richard Curney) Yankee, of Zimmerman, Minnesota; Dierdre Grayson, of Aurora, Colorado; her sister, Annette Mushinski, of Hainesport, New Jersey; grandchildren: Zygmund (Jeanine) J.      A Mass of Christian Burial, for Eleanor, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Walter Dolan, O.F.M. will be the celebrant. The organist will be Dawn Swanson. The Church choir will sing. Additional special music will include: ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘People will say we’re in love’, sung by Frank Ludwig. Mass servers will include: Samuel Jablonski and Vincente Jablonski. Her casket bearers will include: Angela Hernandez, John Hebert, Daniel Hebert, Zygmund Jablonski IV, Casimir Curney, and Julian Root.
     Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, will follow the Mass.

     Debra A. Zakovec, age 54, of 125 Fayette Ave, Mellen, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.
     Deb was born, on May 14, 1954, in Ironwood, Michigan, the daughter of Earl Gingery and Pauline Trombi. She and James W. Zakovec were united in marriage, in Mellen, on October 7, 1972. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
     Survivors include: James, her loving husband of 36 years, of Mellen; two daughters: Shelia and her husband, Jon Dupee, Jr., of Mellen; and Heather White and her husband, Chad, of Mellen; and her son, Gary Zakovec and his wife, Tammy, of Highbridge, Wisconsin and seven grandchildren: Megan, Jon III, Brittany, Calven, Dakota, Tyler and Kyla. She is also survived by: John, James and his wife, Denise; Patty and her husband, Doug; Chuck and his wife, Julie; Mike  and his wife, Carol; Cathy and her husband, Mike; Harold and Josephine, Robert and his wife, Anna; Kathy  and her husband, John; Mary and her husband, Robert; Barbara  and her husband, Dale; Joe  and his wife, Tanya; Bobby  and his wife, Helen; Carol; Judy; Janice; Dick and his wife, Mary; Bunny; Donna and her husband, John; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her mother Polly ‘Grandma’ Popovich.
     A visitation, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen, will begin at 9 a.m., Friday, May 15, 2009, and continue until the hour of service.

     George L. Zepczyk, age 80, of 23915 Klobucher Road, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Monday, August 17, 2009, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.
     George was born, on February 25, 1929, in Robinsdale, Minnesota, the son of George and Ruth E. (Bendixen) Zepczyk. He was a WWII Veteran, serving with the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949. He and Helen A. Cuchra were united in marriage, in Ashland, on May 24, 1952. He worked for the Soo Line Railroad from 1950 to 1960, was a dairy farmer from 1958 to 1981, owned and operated bulk milk trucks from 1978 to 2001, and drove bus for the Ondossagon School District from 1978 to 1991. He had been a member of: the N.F.O., since 1961; the United Chequamegon Area Veterans; and  the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Iron River Council #12738. He was a director of the Bayfield Electric Coop, for over 17 years and served as a Bayfield County Deputy Coroner for many years.
     Survivors include: Helen, his wife of 57 years; their three daughters: Carolyn M. Claremboux and her husband, Ted, of Ashland; Kathleen S. Gustafson and her husband, Steve, of Cross Lake, Minnesota; Jeanne L. Zepczyk of Denmark, Wisconsin; and four sons: Vernon G. Zepczyk and his wife, Carrie, of Ashland; David A. Zepczyk, of Mason, Wisconsin; Richard A. Zepczyk, of Mason and Thomas M. Zepczyk and his wife, Barbara, of Mason. He is also survived by: 20 grandchildren; ten step-grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; his sister, Phyllis  Reshal and her husband, Robert, of Pittsville, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews.
     George was preceded in death by: his parents and two sisters: Elsie Ortman and Velma Allred.
     His visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. Military honors, by the United Chequqmegon Area Veterans, will be held at 7:15, followed by a prayer service at 7:30. The visitation will resume, at the Saint Peter Catholic Church, in Dauby, Wisconsin, at 10 a.m., Wednesday, and continue until the hour of service.

The casket bearers will include: Shay Zepczyk, Jacob Zepczyk, Joshua Zepczyk, Thomas Zepczyk, Jr., Zachary Zepczyk and Austin Zepczyk.
     Interment, in the Saint Peter Cemetery, Dauby, will follow the Mass.

     Kenneth Joe Zimmerman, age 69, of 811 North Butler Road, Mellen, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, in his home.
     Ken was born, on April 18, 1938, in Buffalo, Missouri, the son of John and Mabel (Cole) Zimmerman. He and Linda L. Cooper were united in marriage, on February 11, 1966, in Ventura, California. He owned and operated his own body shop, for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and restoring cars.
     Survivors include: his wife, Linda, of Mellen; and their children: Helen Sokolich, of Ashland, Wisconsin; William Zimmerman and his wife, Priscilla; Nelson Zimmerman and Billy Zimmerman and his wife, Suzanna; all of Mellen. He is also survived by his six sisters: Evelyn McDade and her husband, Lauren, of Turlock, California; Juanita Johnson and her husband, Robert, of Palmdale, Caolifornia; Mary Corona, of Modesto, California; Vicky Vanderveen and her husband, Howard, of Modesto; Karen Norton, of Vaccaville, California and Sharon Zimmerman, of Santa Maria, California. Other survivors include: eight grandchildren: Tiffanie Otto, Ariel Otto, Daniel Otto, Rachel Coloma, Nick Zimmerman, Joey Zimmerman, Annie Zimmerman and Shania Zimmerman; two great granddaughters: Elena Coloma and Nataliah Otto; nieces and nephews.
     Ken was preceded in death by: his parents, brothers and sisters.
     A visitation, for family and friends, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen, will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2008 and continue until the hour of the service.
     A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen. Reverend James Imse will officiate. The casket bearers will include: Nick Zimmerman, Joey Zimmerman, Bill Zimmerman, Nelson Zimmerman, William Zimmerman and Daniel Otto.
     Interment, in the Mellen Union Cemetery, will follow the church service.

     John E. Zurian, age 97, of 68300 Zurian Road, Ashland, Wisconsin, died in his home, on Monday, November 16, 2009.
     John was born, on July 4, 1912, in a log cabin on the Zurian homestead in Moquah, Wisconsin, the son of Joseph and Mary (Hlatko) Zurian. He attended the Moquah State Graded School until the seventh grade when he was needed to help on the family farm. He and Anna Zoldos were united in marriage, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Moquah, on November 6, 1948. With his family, he farmed 80 acres for over 60 years, raising dairy cows, hay, bees, vegetables and fruit. He also served as Town of Pilsen Health Officer for over 30 years and the Assessor for 18 years. As Assessor, he visited every homestead in the Moquah area and became well acquainted with the people and the local history. He was a grave digger for Saints Peter and Paul cemeteries for nine years and treasurer of the Moquah State Graded School for over 11 years. During the 1930’s John played violin with “The Pioneers”, entertaining neighbors at dances and local get-togethers. For a short time he worked as a janitor at the Beloit Corporation and the Benoit School. He began work with the US Forestry Department, at age 65, under the Senior Program, mentoring many young adults. He retired at age 80. He was a charter member of the Moquah Men’s Club and the Moquah Heritage Society. As a senior correspondent for the Ethnic Voice, he was a source of information for community history. He always enjoyed telling stories and playing practical jokes on friends. In 1991 John traveled to Slovakia, homeland of his parents, where he met many cousins for the first time.
     John is survived by his children: Barbara  Grek and her husband, John, of Moquah; Marie Zurian, of Moquah; Kenneth Zurian and his wife, Valorie, of Superior, Wisconsin and Irene Walter and her husband, David, of Moquah; grandchildren: Jennifer Grek Martin, and her husband, Jason; David Sandgren and Samuel Zurian; niece, Georgeianna Williams and her husband, Kent.
     John was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife, Anna, on November 18, 2005, and his brothers: Joe, Emil and George.
     A visitation, for family and friends, will be held, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, November 19, 2009, and will feature a 7 p.m. prayer service.
     A Mass of Christian Burial, for John, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 20, 2009, at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Moquah. Father Gabriel Zepczyk will be the celebrant. The casket bearers will include: David Walter, David Vosburgh, Kenneth Zurian, Ron Girga, Mark Huybrecht and Robert Sukula.
     Interment will take place in Saint Pater and Paul Old Catholic Cemetery, in Moquah, Wisconsin.
