Martin W. Hanson
Martin W. Hanson, age 81 years, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at his home near Mellen, Wisconsin. He was born, in Oak Park, Illinois, on January 23, 1927, to Martin and Ann Carol Hanson. He attended Oak Park High School and Northwestern University. During World War II, he was twice decorated by the U.S. Navy. Martin worked as a traveling salesman for Hanson Furniture Company. Throughout his life, he was extremely active in Democratic politics, including serving as the representative, in northern Wisconsin, for United States Representative Dave Obey. In 1963, Martin guided President John F. Kennedy through the Apostle Islands.
Martin devoted most of his life to advancing conservation causes. His activities in that regard are too numerous to mention, as are the awards and accolades he has received. The October 24, 2008, headline article in the Ashland Daily Press, that follows this obituary, addresses many of his activities. Martin’s homestead is covered by a Land Conservation Easement granted to the Bayfield Regional Conservancy. In 1969, Martin; his brother, Louis Hanson and his sister, Anne Hanger, donated more than 1200 acres of land to the Univeristy of Wisconsin. The University subsequently transferred that property to the United States Forest Service. The North Country Trail crosses that land and a large stretch of the Brunsweiler River, including Beaver Dam Lake, flows through it. One of Martin’s latest projects was advocating for Wild and Scenic River status for the Brunsweiler River.
A lifelong conservationist, Martin filmed thousands of hours of wildlife in action, transferring much of it onto videotape. He researched the natural history of each animal species and added his own observations.
In 2003, the Northern Great Lakes Regional Visitor Center dedicated its theatre in his name, in honor of his assistance in establishing the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge and the Northern Great Lakes Regional Visitor Center.
In 2004, Martin received a national award from the National Parks and Conservation Association for his lifelong efforts on behalf of the Apostle Islands and other Great Lakes parks.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Ann Carol Hanson; his brother, Louis Hanson; his sister, Anne Hanger; and his good friend Gaylord Nelson.
Martin is survived by: his sister-in-law, Camilla Hanson; his nephew, Robert (Leslie) Hanger; his niece, Ann E. (Marv) Hamann; grandnephews: Bo Hanger and Thomas (Ronnie) Rossberger, Jr.; grandnieces: Carolyne (Chad) Markus and Kristine Hamann; great-grandnephews: Cameron Hanger, Evan Hanger, Thomas J. Rossberger, III and Mathew Reinert, great-grandniece, Elizabeth Rossberger and long-time friends: Robert ‘Bo’ and Sonnie Dunne and Florence Kocar.
Upon Martin’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Apostle Islands, P.O. Box 1574, Bayfield, Wisconsin, 54814.
Our Mellen Chapel has been entrusted with his arrangements.

The Ashland Daily Press – Headline Article – October 24, 2008. He remained champion of the wild until the end. Dedicated conservationist, Martin Hanson, dead at 81.
by Chad Dally
Intense. Tenacious. Selfless. Persistent. Prankster. These are just a few of the words friends and family used to describe Martin Hanson, a dedicated conservationist and political activist, who passed away Wednesday, at his home near Mellen, at the age of 81.
“Martin was not a household name to most people in Wisconsin, but to public officials and environmental advocates, and certainly to people in northern Wisconsin, it was his heart, his passion and his vision to preserve natural resources that we relied upon,” State Senator Bob Jauch, Democrat from Poplar, in a statement made yesterday.
Hanson apparently fell and broken his hip. A complete autopsy will be conducted today.
From the time he moved, as a child with his family, onto 1,200 acres near Mellen, until his death, Hanson was a tireless advocate for the woods and wildlife.
His list of accomplishments and efforts to raise awareness and appreciation for wilderness, friends said, ranks alongside the likes of Aldo Leopold, John Muir and the late Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who founded Earth Day and maintained a close friendship with Hanson.
Hanson and his brother, Louis, were instrumental in the designation of the Apostle Islands as a National Lakeshore. His efforts led to the Saint Croix and Namekagon being named as National Scenic Riverways. He helped establish Whittlesey Creek as a wildlife refuge, worked with others to construct the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and championed the reintroduction of elk and coaster brook trout into the state.
Some 1,000 of the original 1,200 acres of family homestead were donated to the University of Wisconsin, later becoming part of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. He recently signed an easement agreement, with the Bayfield Regional Conservancy, to preserve another 85 acres of that land from further development or degradation.
For all of his doggedness to preserve and protect wild places, he seldom sought the spotlight. “There’s always someone behind the great leaders who is helping nurture the idea and advance the idea and strategy. Martin was one of those people.” Tia Nelson, daughter of Gaylord Nelson, in a Thursday telephone. “He was behind a whole bunch of really great things that my father did, working behind the scenes in a very quiet and humble way.”
It often started by putting a bug in someone’s ear. The idea of getting National Lakeshore status for the Apostle Islands, for example, began with Martin and Louis Hanson, while the latter was working for Senator Nelson in the late 1950′s and early 1960′s. Nelson then bent the ear of President John F. Kennedy and was persuasive enough to convince the President to do a fly-over of The Islands in 1963. Even though it would be seven years before The Islands would officially become a National Lake Shore, Martin Hanson used a variety of methods to promote the area.
Ashland resident Bob Dunne, a lifelong friend of Hanson, recalled how, prior to Kennedy’s visit, Hanson got on the phone with the yacht clubs to get as many sailboats into Lake Superior as possible. By the time the helicopter flew over The Islands, “Kennedy said ‘it looked just like Hyannisport’.”
Tia Nelson has also known Hanson since childhood, when her family would spend part of the summer on Hanson’s property. She said Hanson and her father could usually be found doing one of two things, talking about politics and conservation or playing pranks on each other.
The cabins on the Hanson compound could occasionally be filled with more people. Nelson remembers summer nights when 20 of 30 people – normally Democrats in line with Hanson’s own political views – would gather around the dinner table for a night of food and conversation.
“If you were an important Democrat in the State, at one time or another, you sat around that dining room table and engaged in some type of repartee with the great minds of the time,” she said. “Martin would drive the pontoon boat for cocktail hour discussions and prime the pump, so to speak, and then they’d have these long dinner debates that were really fascinating and fun to observe.”
One of those politicians that frequented Hanson’s home was Representative Dave Obey, Democrat from Wausau. Although laryngitis prevented Obey from speaking to us on Thursday, he said via e-mail that Hanson was “the most complete human being I have ever known. In my view, he was the first citizen of northern Wisconsin,” Obey wrote, adding that Hanson always put the “public good” first.
Jauch echoed that sentiment. “His persistence is one of his renowned strengths, and his selfless persistence – none of this was to help Martin: it was all about helping us appreciate the greatness of this land,” he said.
That unceasing dedication prompted a number of descriptive phrases from family and friends in Thursday interviews:
“Relentless pressure, gently applied,” said Bob Krumenaker, park superintendent of the Apostle Islands.
“He was like a bear with a big toe – he wouldn’t let go until something would happen, and they really had to get it done to get Martin off their backs,” said Camilla Hanson, widow of the late Louis Hanson.
“He was as persistent as a bulldog, he would never give up,” Steve Hoecker, director of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, said. The Visitors Center named its theatre after Hanson in 2003.
“Once he got the bit in his teeth, he didn’t let go. That’s why he had so much success,” said Representative Gary Sherman, Democrat from Port Wing. Martin worked as Sherman’s campaign manager for six years.
The bit never left his teeth either. Sherman and Jauch both worked with Hanson on two projects. Sherman said he’s worked for years with Hanson and the State Department of Transportation to shore up a large clay bank where Highway 13 crosses Trout Creek and the White River, so the red clay wouldn’t fall into either waterway, dam it up and ruin the two trout streams.
Jauch said that one of his regrets was not having shown Hanson a draft of legislation that would establish the Brunsweiler as a state Wild River, similar to the federal designation. Jauch said it’s the first piece of legislation he will introduce in the next session.
If politicians and state or federal officials wouldn’t listen to Hanson, he wouldn’t try to go above them, but he would enlist the help of others.
With the reintroduction of elk into Wisconsin, for example, Hanson initially met resistance from the sate Department of Natural Resources. So, not only did he travel from Pennsylvania to Wyoming, shooting video footage of elk and talking with wildlife experts, he also made presentations to town boards in northern Wisconsin and spoke to sportsmen’s clubs to build a groundswell of support, Dunne said.
It was his tireless effort that all but forced others to listen to Hanson and respect his opinion, Krumenaker said. “He had enough credibility built up over the years, the rest of us would say. Huh, it’s Martin’s idea, I guess we better pay attention because it’s likely to happen.”
Jauch added that nearly all of Hanson’s ideas were “worthy of listening to, and most of them were necessary to follow up on.”
It wasn’t just Hanson’s words that were worthy of listening to. He also amassed hundreds of hours of video footage of bear, bobcats and other wildlife (often shot on his own property) after spending hours in a blind to get the right take.
He was also adamant about others reaching the same level of dedication. Mellen resident and photographer, Jeff Peters, recalled one particular occasion when he came back from shooting wildlife. “Martin scolded me for only spending three straight hours in the blind, shooting pictures of wildlife,” Peters said. “He told me he had once spent eight solid hours in a small blind shooting amazing video of bobcats, perhaps the best bobcat video I have ever watched,” Peters said.
Nelson said shooting wildlife video was one of Hanson’s many passions that continued until his death. “He still had his camera set up and was still taking photographs and video and putting together images that told their story,” she said. “Very much like my father, he felt so happy and grateful that he was able to work until his last days for the things that he cared about, and that’s an extraordinary blessing.”
In addition to shooting video, Nelson also remembered how serious he was about feeding the birds and wildlife that lived near his home, done out of generosity rather that any predatory motive. “God help you if you made the mistake of showing up at the house in the middle of the feeding and scared the animals away,” she said. “You’d get a tongue lashing for ruining the evening’s activities, but of course the animals would come right back and he’d be happy again.”
Hanson’s sense of humor helped level his occasional frustration with politicians and others. Sometimes it was manifested in the form of pranks, directed at Gaylord Nelson or anyone else. While some tales can’t be shared in mixed company, Thom Rossberger, grandson of Hanson’s sister, Anne, and Dunne said that he would sit in the back of a movie theatre with a squirt gun. He would also mail greeting cards, adorned with nude women, without a return address.
He got Dunne and himself thrown out of a bar filled with burly northwoods types by plunking $5 into the juke box and playing nothing but ‘Blue Bayou’ by Linda Ronstadt, Dunne said.
On paper, Hanson was a twice-decorated veteran of the Navy, but many of his friends new the finer details. While in the service, he never left the Great Lakes. His decorations were a good conduct medal and a purple heart for breaking an ankle while taking out the garbage, Dunne said.
Yet Hanson’s occasional jokes and light-hearted moments should not mask the seriousness with which he approached his land ethic and his accomplishments that have yet to be fully comprehended, Krumenaker said Thursday. “My God, the legacy that man left, we’ll only start to understand when he’s gone.”
While it may be “the end of an era,” as Krumenaker and Camilla Hanson both said, Tia Nelson said Hanson’s efforts -humble in approach, significant in their reach – live on. “He was happy to be in the background, as long as he knew he was helping get the job done, and for him the job was all conservation projects, small and large,” she said. “His impact in the State, especially in the north, will endure forever.”
Governor Jim Doyle: “One of Wisconsin’s greatest conservationists. Martin Hanson dedicated his life to making our state a better place to live. Not only did he lead the conservation fight with his words, but also by his actions, generously donating pristine land to the University of Wisconsin for research and working to establish the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. “The State of Wisconsin will miss Martin.”
Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank: “Martin Hanson played a key role in many of Wisconsin’s modern natural resources accomplishments, including the creation of the Apostle Island as a National Lakeshore and the nomination of the Saint Croix and Namekagon Rivers as National Scenic Riverways. He truly was one of Wisconsin’s great conversation leaders. Wisconsin is a better place because of him.”
Senator Russ Feingold: “Martin Hanson dedicated himself to protecting the Wisconsin landscape he loved, and our state benefited from his work in countless ways. His lifelong work to protect the Apostle Islands, among so many efforts, has made a wonderful and lasting contribution to our state. I join so many other Wisconsinites, and conservationists nationwide, in paying tribute to Martin Hanson’s memory today.”
(Photos that accompanied the article included a picture, taken near his home, of a bird perched on the Martin Hanson’s fingertips. Another photo was a 1960′s photo of Martin Hanson, and his brother, Louis, taken with then Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson and Stuart Udall, then the Secretary of the Department of the Interior.)
