Eleanor Julia Teresa Dmochowski Jablonski Yankee

Eleanor Julia Teresa Dmochowski Jablonski Yankee, age 92 of Ashland, WI, passed away Tuesday, Feb 9, 2010 at Ashland, WI.  A native of Riverside, New Jersey, she lived in Ashland after marrying Gerald A. Yankee and returning to his home after the end of his Naval Submarine tour of duty in WWII.

Eleanor was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Riverside, New Jersey, surviving an era of scarlet fever, epidemics, losing her father to black lung disease from working in the mines when she was 12. She and her sisters all worked in the textile mills helping to support their widowed mother through the Great Depression. She was very proud to have graduated from Saint Casimir School. She was smart, pretty, tough and her loving family worked through terrible working conditions and times. Just before the birth of their first child, tragedy struck and she lost her first husband, Zyguund J. Jablonski, leaving her a young widow with a child to support. Her brother and sisters struggled, with a war escalating, trying to help family back in Poland. She gratefully remembered small acts of kindness during those difficult years. Along the Eastern seaboard, the U.S. Navy was stationed at various ports including Philadelphia. In a wonderful happenstance leading to a marriage and life-long romance, Eleanor met and married U.S. Navy Submarine sailor, Gerald Yankee. After the war, with two children, they moved first to the Yankee family farm and then worked as a team in the family business, Yankee Plumbing and Heating until retirement when they enjoyed traveling together through-out the United States and Europe. Eleanor had many talents: she crocheted beautiful, delicate doilies, linens and afghans, always dressed like a million bucks, was a good swimmer, played many card games extremely well, was excellent in cooking traditional Polish meals, breads and soups, made unique, delicious desserts, loved to laugh, play paddy-cake, paddy-cake with her children to her great, great grandchildren, smooched her husband, loved hugs from her family, enjoyed hot summer heat and picnics, read zillions of romance novels, didn’t care if she sang off key, was stubborn, out spoken and grateful.

Eleanor is survived by her children: Zygmund (Jean) Jablonski, Sr., of Ashland; Lorna (Frank) Hernandez of Racine, Wisconsin; Paula (Richard Curney) Yankee, of Zimmerman, Minnesota; Dierdre Grayson, of Aurora, Colorado; her sister, Annette Mushinski, of Hainesport, New Jersey; grandchildren: Zygmund (Jeanine) J. Jablonski III; Anthony ‘Tony’ (Lisa) Jablonski; Jean ‘Pebbles’ (John) Hebert; Denise (Billy Franklin) Munoz; Sherry Hurula; Gerald Hurula; John (Heather) Hurula; Ken Hurula; Angela Hernandez; Casimir Curney; Jasmine and Asha Grayson; great-grandchildren: Jennifer (John) Root; Mary Jo (Dmitri) Jablonski; Gina Jablonski; Zygmund Jablonski IV; Kira Munoz; Tony Munoz; Billy Franklin; Shennelle Hurula; Jake, Chad, Alyssa, Amber, Ryan, Josh, Marybelle, and Kayla Hurula; Michael, John, and Daniel Hebert; Vincente, Samuel, and Lily Jablonski; great great-grandchildren: Julian, Sophia, and Sonja Root; Ginneva Jablonski; and Isaiah, and Elias Hurula.

Eleanor was preceded in death by: her parents, Stanley and Pauline Dmochowski; her step-father, Pop Matella; sisters and brothers-in-law: Sophie (Tom) Kolongowski; Stella (Stanley) Fierst; Irene (Tom) Czarczasty; and brother and sister-in-law, Casimir (Marie) Dmochowski; brother-in-law, Walter Mushinski; her first husband, Zygmund J. Jablonski, Sr.; her second husband, of almost 50 years, Gerald A. Yankee; as well as uncles; aunts; and other dear relatives.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010, and feature a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Eleanor, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Walter Dolan, O.F.M. will be the celebrant. The organist will be Dawn Swanson. The Church choir will sing. Additional special music will include: ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘People will say we’re in love’, sung by Frank Ludwig. Mass servers will include: Samuel Jablonski and Vincente Jablonski. Her casket bearers will include: Angela Hernandez, John Hebert, Daniel Hebert, Zygmund Jablonski IV, Casimir Curney, and Julian Root.

Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, will follow the Mass.

Beverly Joan Jackson

Beverly Joan Jackson, age 71, of Bayfield, Wisconsin, died Saturday, January23, 2010, in her home.

Beverly was born on January 16, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Elston Clay and Martha Margaret (Carlson) Anthony.

She is survived by: her husband, Neville W. Jackson, of Ashland; two daughters: Peggy Romero and her husband, Carl, of Bayfield; Cynthia Hoem; and her husband, Rodney, of Ettrick, Wisconsin; and her son, Christopher Lehmann and his wife, Josie, of Golden Valley, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by: her parents, four sisters and her brother.

Memorial services for Beverly Jackson were held at 4 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland.

Stan Lee Jackson

Stan Lee Jackson, age 55, of Odanah, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2011, at Golden Living Center – Court Manor, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Stan was born, on July 9, 1956, in Ashland, the son of Daniel John and Chrystal Gladys (Smart) Jackson. He grew up in Schofield, Wisconsin and graduated from D.C. Everest High School, in Schofield, 1974, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University, in 1978. Stan served briefly in the United States Marine Corps.

Stan and Susan Lee were united in marriage, in 1991, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Stan was the manager of Pain Dry Ice Company, in Milwaukee, for 17 years.

Survivors include: four daughters: Vanessa Shepard, Chrystal Sue Jackson, Cheyenne Spring Jackson, and Autumn Rain Jackson; and three grandchildren: Landon Sobiesczcyk, Paxdon Sobiesczcyk and Robert Charles ‘R.C’ Old Coyote. He is also survived by: his brother: Dana (Cathy) Jackson, of Odanah; and two sisters: Joy (Glen) Kulkoski, of Hartland, Wisconsin, and Candy (Keith Kutchins) Jackson, of Spokane, Washington; special aunts: Pearl Bigboy and Darlene Kupcso; cousins, other relatives and friends.

Stan was preceded in death by: the beloved mother of his children: Susan Lee; his daughter, Erica Lee Jackson; his parents, Daniel and Chrystal Jackson; his brother, John W. Jackson, and two infant siblings.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. There will be a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Stan, will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, in Odanah. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. Casket bearers will include: Daniel Jackson, John Jackson, Mike Sweet, Randall ‘Makwa’ Gougé, Glen Kulkoski, and Keith Kutchins.

Mary Ann Jaeger

Mary Ann Jaeger, age 73, of 71314 County Highway C, Highbridge, Wisconsin, died, in her home, on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, with her loving family near her side.

Mary Ann was born, on July 27, 1935, in Mellen, Wisconsin, the daughter of Anton and Rose (Beyer) Huber. She was united in marriage, to Lawrence Jaeger, in Mellen, on July 2, 1955. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her family, whom she loved very much.

Survivors include: Larry, her husband of 53 years; their three daughters: Debra Jaeger, of San Antonio, Texas; Kathy Winkler and her husband, Buck, of Daggett, Michigan; and Donna Jaeger, of Park Falls, Wisconsin; and one son, Lawrence A. Jaeger and his wife, Charlotte, of Hayward, Wisconsin. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Robert Huber and his wife, Nyla, of Kenosha, Wisconsin; and Richard Huber and his wife, Vicki, of Mellen, Wisconsin; one sister, Margaret ‘Boostie’ Jones and her husband, John, of Mellen, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Anton and Rose and one brother, James.

A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Saint Anthony Catholic Church, in Highbridge, and continue until the hour of service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Saint Anthony Catholic Church, in Highbridge. Father Dean Buttrick will be the celebrant. The casket bearers will include: Neil Jaeger, Phillip Jaeger, John Jaeger, Mark Jaeger, Roger Jaeger and Leonard Jaeger.

Interment, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Highbridge, will immediately follow the mass.

Florence J. Janke

Florence J. Janke, age 101, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, passed away on October 15, 2010, at Highland Chateau Health Care Center, in Saint Paul.

Florence was born, on March 21, 1909, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Clifton and Maude (Carver) Smith. She and William J. Janke were united in marriage, in Ironwood, Michigan, in 1934. She was a homemaker and, for many years, a registered nurse.

Survivors include: her daughters: Faith (Peter) Gavin, of Minneapolis; and Donna (William) Salzwedel, of Madison, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Florence is also survived by: one sister, Leola Davis, of Hayward, Wisconsin; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Janke, of Saint Paul; many nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by: her husband, William, in 1964; two sons: Roger and Keith; one daughter, Leola Nelson; and her parents, Clifton and Maude Smith.

A gathering, for the family and friends of Florence, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Interment and a graveside committal service, officiated by Patricia Luostari, will take place at the Mount Hope Cemetery, in Ashland, immediately following the gathering at the Funeral Home. Casket bearers will include: Richard Janke, Robert Janke, Rodney Janke, Russell Janke, David Nelson, and Demetri Kahriman.

Memorials are preferred, in lieu of flowers, to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or the United Methodist Church in Ashland.

Roger Kraig Janke

Roger Kraig Janke, age 71, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, died Monday, November 24, 2008, in Maple Township, Wisconsin.

Roger was born, on March 19, 1937, in Laurium, Michigan, the son of William and Florence (Smith) Janke. He and Ruth M. Luostari, were united in marriage, on July 9, 1960, in Poplar, Wisconsin. He was a General Motors parts salesman, for over 40 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing. He passed away while doing what he loved, hunting the elusive whitetail deer. He was an active member of Randolph Heights Presbyterian Church, in Saint Paul. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, whom he loved very much.

Survivors include: Ruth, his wife of 48 years; their four sons: Richard Janke and his wife, Renata, of Maplewood, Minnesota; Robert Janke and his wife, Dawn, of Blaine, Minnesota; Rodney Janke and his wife, Melody, of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Russell Janke and his wife, Lois, of Wyoming, Minneosta; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild. Survivors also include: his mother, Florence Janke, of Saint Paul; two sisters: Faith Gavin and her husband, Peter, of Richfield, Minnesota and Donna Salzwedel and her husband, William, of Madison, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his father, William; one brother, Keith, and one sister, Leola.

Katherine M. Jarecki

Katherine M. Jarecki, age 86, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, formerly of Ashland, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at the Comforts of Home Care Facility in Chippewa Falls.

Katherine was born, on April 29, 1921, in Ashland, the daughter of John and Mary (Dobiash) Sopoci. She and Joseph J. Jarecki were united in marriage, in Ashland, on June 29, 1946. A homemaker, she enjoyed: crossword puzzles, cooking, playing the accordion, polka dancing, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and her dog, Misty. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. From 1972 to 1983, she was the manager of Grandma’s Kitchen.

Survivors include: her son, Joseph W. Jarecki and his wife, Terri, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; her daughter, Vicki Saric, of Altoona, Wisconsin; six grandchildren: Tammy Jarecki, of Altoona; Joe Saric and his wife, Crystal, of Peoria, Illinois; Tonya Pongratz and her husband, Randy, of Mondovi, Wisconsin; Brian Saric of Chippewa Falls; Angela Blackman and her husband, Tony, of Pekin, Illinois; and Dr. Heidi Jarecki of Eau Claire. She is also survived by five great grandchildren: Taryn, Joshua, Jeremiah, Jozi and Charlotte; two sisters: Eva Kacvinsky and Emily Nemec, both of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

Katherine was preceded in death by: her parents, John and Mary; her husband, Joe, on July 19, 1996; three brothers: Tony Sopoci, John Sopoci, Jr., and Joseph Sopoci; two sisters: Mary Gregor and Margaret Serio and her son in law, Edward Saric.

A visitation, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, January 6, 2008, will include a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. The visitation will continue, at the Funeral Home, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., on Monday.

A Mass of Christian Burial, will be held, for Katherine, at 11 a.m., Monday, January 7, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Henry V. Willenborg, O.F.M., will be the celebrant.

Interment, in Saint Peter Cemetery, Dauby, Wisconsin, will take place during the spring of 2008, on a day and at a time that have yet to be determined.

Everette Leo Jensen

Everette Leo Jensen, age 83, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Golden Living Center-Court Manor, in Ashland.

Everette was born, on January 13, 1926, in Phillips, Wisconsin, the son of Roy and Elsie (Cody) Jensen. He was a member of the 1943 graduating class of Ashland High School. During World War II, Everette served with the United States Navy. He and Alice Lorrain Giesregen were united in marriage, in Ashland, on June 19, 1948. They have remained in love for over 61 years.

Everette worked for the Soo Line Railroad, Splicewood Manufacturing and as a millwright for the James River Corp, from which he retired. He was a member of the Kelly-Johnson American Legion Post 90 and the Northwest Wisconsin Rod and Gun Club, both of Ashland. He was an avid sportsman all of his life and dearly loved being in the woods, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, games and telling stories. He enjoyed woodworking and created many beautiful carvings in his spare time. He was especially loved by children and always took time to smile, laugh and tease them.

Survivors include: Alice, his wife of 61 years, of Ashland; their two daughters: Sharon Cook and her husband, David; and Janice Richardson and her husband, Donald, all of Washburn, Wisconsin; his granddaughter, Jamie Welch and her husband, Scott; and grandson, Jeremy Cook, also of Washburn. Everette is also survived by his three great-grandsons: Shea, Philip and Greyson; his sister, Dorothy Schiller of Hurley, Wisconsin and many beloved nieces and nephews. He leaves his family and friends with many good memories and will be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by: his parents and seven siblings.

A visitation, for family and friends will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, beginning at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2009, continuing until the hour of service.

A Funeral Service for Everette will be held at 12 Noon, Wednesday December 30, 2009, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M. will officiate. Casket bearers will include: David Cook, Donald Richard, Shea Burmeister, Carl Seeger, John Giesregen, Eugene Dandeneau. Military Honors, by the United Chequamegon Area Veterans, will immediately follow the service. Lunch will be served, at the American Legion Hall in Ashland, immediately thereafter.

Interment in Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, will occur at 3 p.m., Friday, June 18, 2010.

Sarah G. Jensen

Sarah G. Jensen, age 89, of 600 West Fourth Street, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Saint Luke’s Medical Center, in Duluth, Minnesota.

Sarah was born, on October 31, 1919, in Senhenydd, Glamonshire, Wales, the daughter of Bert J. and Jane (Jenkins) Litchfield. She was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Royal Air Force, from September 9, 1942, until August 29, 1945. She was united in marriage, to Nolan N. Jensen, at Highams Park, London, England, on September 9, 1943. A homemaker, she enjoyed knitting and going to the casino. She was a member of: the Eagles Lodge, the Moose Lodge and was past president of the VFW Woman’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include her seven children: Jane Buska and her husband, David, of Caledonia, Wisconsin; Linda Coe and her husband, Arnold, of Highams Park, London England; Andy Jensen and his wife, Linda, of Slinger, Wisconsin; David Jensen and his wife, Colleen, of Washburn, Wisconsin; Donald Jensen and his wife, Vonda Schanandore, of Ashland; Barbara Smith and her husband, J.R. Adkison, of Tampa, Florida and Terrie Stuart and her husband, Ray, of Ashland. Sarah is also survived by: seventeen grandchildren: Bryon, Doug, Lisa, Mark, Ben, Suzie, Thomas, Richard, Nolan, Amy, Sarah, Amanda, Megan, Brian, Jensen, Steven and Haillie; and sixteen great-grandchildren: Jaida, Dylan, Gage, Milek, Aries, Izadora, Phoenix, Preston, Paige, Eloise, Maxwell, Aine, Niamh, Annabel, Dominic and Elijah. Other survivors include: three sisters: Gwlad Taylor, Margaret Darnell and her husband, Richard, and Beryl Abel and her husband, Len, all of England; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Bert and Jane Litchfield; her husband, Nolan, on December 25, 1991; one brother, Thomas Litchfield; three sisters: Gwen Bourner, Miriam Cater and Olive Gardener.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. The visitation will resume, at the United Presbyterian Church, in Ashland, at 9:00 a.m., Friday, and continue until the hour of service.

A Funeral Service, for Sarah Jensen, will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2008, at the United Presbyterian Congregational Church, in Ashland. Dr. Darrel M. Robertson will officiate. Casket bearers will include: Bryon Buska, Doug Buska, Eric Dvorachek, Mark Tomlinson, Nolan Jensen and Steven Stuart.

Interment will take place in the Mount Hope Cemetery, in Ashland, in the spring of 2009, on a day and at a time that have yet to be determined.

Memorials are preferred to the United Presbyterian Congregational Church, in Ashland.

James H. Johnson

James H. Johnson, age 89, of Iron River, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Jim was born, on July 4, 1921, in Edgerton, Wisconsin, the son of Henry B. and Emma (Kraus) Johnson. He attended high school in Monroe, Wisconsin, graduating in 1940. As a young man, Jim and his family moved to Delta, Wisconsin, where they owned and operated the Pine Point Lodge, on Eagle Lake. Jim was a WW II Army veteran and worked as a Steward aboard Great Lakes vessels, until his retirement, in 1983. He and Betty Hanson were united in marriage, in Pine City, Minnesota, on June 14, 1948. They celebrated 22 years of marriage and were blessed with three sons, when she died, on October 25, 1970.

He and Virginia M. Tanula were united in marriage on January 12, 1974. They had celebrated 33 years of marriage when she died on January 25, 2007.

Jim’s hobbies and pastimes included: fishing, wood working and photography. He was an excellent cook and loved to cook and entertain others. Over the years, he and his brother, Dick, have cooked the annual spaghetti dinners, for the Iron River School, and pancake breakfasts, for the Iron River V.F.W. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all of those who gratefully shared in his life.

Survivors include: his sons: James L. (Patricia) of Superior, Wisconsin; John R. and William E. (Cathy), all of Iron River; one step-son, Gerald E. (Lois) Tanula, of Iron River; and two step-daughters: Linda (Kenneth) Watters and Carrie (James) DeRosia, all of Iron River. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Alanna Epping, Andrew Johnson, Robert Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, Kristine Luoma, Bonnie Brannan, Jerry Watters, Scott Tanula, Diane Walsh, Laura Sanderson, Jill Pohjonen, Lisa Trask, Jennifer Mattson, Lindsay Mattson, Lori Mattson, James DeRosia, Jr., Jason DeRosia, Joe DeRosia, Matt DeRosia and Mary Roelke; thirty-three great grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Marge Johnson, of Iron River; nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by: his first wife, Betty; his second wife, Virginia; his parents; and his brother, Richard.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at Noon, Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, in Iron River, and continue until the hour of service.

A funeral service, for Jim, will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, September 10, 2010, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, in Iron River. Reverend Kristina Jensen will officiate. Casket bearers will include: Andrew Johnson, Robert Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Scott Tanula, Jerry Watters, and Tony Brannan.

Interment will take place in the Iron River Cemetery, Iron River. Military honors will be performed by the joint honor squad of V.F.W. Post 10197 and American Legion Post 506, of Iron River.

Nels E. Johnson

Nels E. Johnson, age 74, of Iron River, Wisconsin, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Nels was born, on October 27, 1934, in Eau Clair, Wisconsin, the son of Oscar W. and Esther (Benson) Johnson. He grew up on a farm near Bruce, Wisconsin, and graduated from Lady Smith High School, in Lady Smith, Wisconsin.

Nels worked road construction most of his life. For a few years he was co-owner of a blacktopping business in Iron River. He was a member of: the Iron River Snowmobile Association, North Trails ATV Club and Local 1091 of the Laborers International Union of North America. He enjoyed having a good time. His interests included: riding his ATV and snowmobile, fishing, playing darts and pool, woodworking and welding, working on small engines, old tractors and cars and going to stock car races.

Nels married Nancy Holly Bowker Nelson, on November 1, 1984, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nels is survived by: his wife, Nancy; his children: Nancy D’Amore and her husband, Glen, of Superior, Wisconsin; Scott Johnson, of Superior; Donna Haugdahl, of Superior; Terry Johnson and his wife, Maureen, of Iron River; and the mother of his children, Eunice Johnson, of South Range, Wisconsin. He is also survived by: his step-children: Chris Bowker and his wife, Debbie, of Saint Paul, Minnesota and Robert Bowker, of Iron River; numerous grandchildren; one great grandchild; his brother, Richard Johnson and his wife, Marie, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law, Helen Granstrom and her husband, Dale, of Iron River.

Nels was preceded in death by: his parents, Oscar and Esther Johnson; his brother, Gene Johnson; his sister Arlene Marrow and her husband Bob.

A gathering to celebrate Nels’ life will be held this coming summer, on a day and at a time that have yet to be determined.

Interment, in the Iron River Cemetery, Iron River, Wisconsin, will also occur on a day and at a time that have yet to be determined.

Richard Donald Johnson

Richard Donald Johnson, 84, of Seminole Florida, passed away June 10th in Seminole.

Dick was born January 14, 1927, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Bertha (Groth) and O.L. Johnson.  He was the youngest of three sons.  He grew up and attended high school in McGregor, Minnesota, graduating from the Class of 1944.  He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.  He married Violet Wydra on August 21, 1948, in Wright, Minnesota.  In his early career he was an On-Air Reporter for KCOM Radio in Sioux City, Iowa.  He became manager of Pineland Telephone Company in McGregor, and later managed the Dickey Rural Telephone Cooperative in Ellendale, North Dakota.   He then began working with the USDA Rural Electrification Administration (REA) serving small Telephone companies located in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, retiring in 1994.  He stayed very active in photography for many years following his retirement and was also active in the Mended Hearts, a Support Group to people with heart disease or going through surgery.

He is survived by: two sons: Richard (Rick), of Madison; and Mark, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; four Grandchildren; and four Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his wife Violet (in 1994); his parents, O.L (1977) and Bertha (1957); and his brothers: Clyde (2001), and Warren (1987).

Inurnment will be held, at a later date, in Greenwood Cemetery, LaPointe (Madeline Island), Wisconsin.

The family requests that any memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Richard L. Johnson

Richard L. Johnson, age 84, of Ashland, Wisconsin, formerly of Iron River, Wisconsin, died on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at the Golden Living Center-Court Manor in Ashland.

‘Dick’ was born, on April 6, 1925, in Janesville, Wisconsin, the son of Henry B. and Emma (Kraus) Johnson. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He and Marjorie E. Hicks were united in marriage, in Sandstone, Minnesota, on December 19, 1957. Dick was a steward on the Great Lakes for over 30 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10197 in Iron River. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends.

Survivors include: Marjorie, his wife of 52 years, of Iron River; their two sons: Chris Johnson and his wife, Peggy and Lloyd Johnson and his wife, Morgan, all of Iron River; and two daughters: Louise Smith and her husband, Wally, of Iron River; and Lynn Olson and her husband, Scott, of Phillips, Wisconsin. Dick is also survived by: eight grandchildren; three great granddaughters; his brother, James Johnson, of Washburn, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at VFW Post 10197, in Iron River, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until the hour of the service.

A funeral service, for Dick Johnson, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2010, at VFW Post 10197, in Iron River. Dale Mitchell and Chaplain Wally Skerbeck will officiate. Frans F. Jolma

Frans F. Jolma, age 76, of Marengo, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at the Golden Living Center – Court Manor, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Frans was born on July 22, 1935, in Marengo, the son of Henry B. and Ellen E. (Antilla) Jolma. He and Marva Jean Meyer were united in marriage, in Mellen, Wisconsin, on June 28, 1958. He was a logger for many years and owned and operated his own bulldozing business. Many knew Frans through the numerous packs of chewing gum he gave so unselfishly. He and his wife, Marva, were co-founders of the Marengo Athletic Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family, whom he loved very much.

Survivors include: his children: Charles (Mary), of Appleton, Wisconsin; Jenny (Stephen) Walston, of Marengo; James (Sally), of Ashland; Peter (Ronda), of Ashland; Ray (Candace), of Marengo; and Patrick (Tanya), of Ashland; grandchildren: Cassie Jean, Zachary, Ryan, Brent, Blake, Christopher, Jordan, Craig, Rebecca, Corey, Kade, Kye, Aiden and Camden; and great-grandchildren: Garrett, Leif, Lewis and Josephine. Frans is also survived by: his brothers: Daniel, of Marengo; John (Esther), of Ashland; and Mark (Barbara), of Marengo; sisters: Ruth (Harold) Redinger, of Ashland; Priscilla Blakeman, of Marengo; Rachel (Gordon) Tikka, of Marengo; Mary (Silas) Blakeman, of Marengo; LaVerne (Dean) Webb, of Marengo; his brother-in-law, Lyle Ransford of Washington; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Marva , on November 13, 2001; his parents; and two sisters: Eleanor Foley and Dorothy Ransford.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, in Marengo, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2012, and continuing until the hour of service.

Dabney A. ‘Toodles’ Joseph

Dabney A. ‘Toodles’ Joseph, age 68, of Glidden, Wisconsin, walked home with Jesus, on March 9, 2008, after bravely battling multiple sclerosis for more than thirty years. The disease ravaged her body, but it was no match for her mind and strong spirit. She passed away in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 68 years old.

Dabney was born, in Glidden, on June 14, 1939, to Woodrow N. and Lucille F. (Eder) Kehring. She graduated with the Glidden High School Class of 1957. She married Harold D. Joseph, on October 18, 1958, in Glidden. She worked several jobs throughout her lifetime. Although she lived in Glidden most of her life, she and Harold resided in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Rapid City, South Dakota, near the end of his work career. They had seven children. She was a lifetime member of the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, in Glidden and its Saint Ann’s Solidarity. She volunteered in several capacities for her Church, including: board member, catechism teacher and choir member.

Dabney lived for her family. She was always happiest being a homemaker and spending time with her family. She deeply loved and was very proud of: her husband, children and grandchildren. She did her best to instill in her children the virtues that her parents taught her: faith, honesty, hard work, dependability, sharing and respect for others. She enjoyed doing many different activities for and with her family, especially: baking, playing cards, doing crafts and watching her grandchildren grow.

She is survived by: Harold, her loving husband of almost 50 years and their six surviving children: Julie Joseph and her husband, Lennie, of Berlin, Wisconsin; Douglas Joseph and his wife, Wendy, of Ellsworth, Wisconsin; William

Joseph and his wife, Deana, of Maplewood, Minnesota; Kurt Joseph and his wife, Janel, of Austin, Texas; Daniel Joseph and his wife, Jessica, of Malone, Wisconsin and Melissa Wiener and her husband, Donald, of Mellen, Wisconsin.

She is also survived by: twelve grandchildren: Nicole Traczyk, David Joseph, Sarah Joseph, Kathryn Joseph, Mikayla Joseph, Reagan Joseph, Gabriella Joseph, Ethan Joseph, Samuel Joseph, Caitlin Joseph, Joseph Wiener and

Stephanie Wiener and one great grandchild, Blair Boening. Other survivors include: one sister, Valorey Eineichner and her husband, Richard, of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; two brothers: Woodrow Kehring and his wife, Marianne, of Independence, Missouri and Gregorey Kehring and his wife, Karen, of Plainfield, Wisconsin; one sister in law, Elaine Lenz and her husband, William, of Delevan, Wisconsin; numerous nephews and nieces.

Toodles was preceded in death by: her parents, Woodrow and Lucille; an infant son, Joey Joseph and her grandparents: William and Rose Kehring and Frank X. and Hilda Eder.

So many people helped with Dabney’s care, during her battle with multiple sclerosis. The family extends its deepest gratitude to all the wonderful people at Supportive Home Services, who provided her with loving care and friendship during the past two years. They are very special people. The family also extends a thank you to Dr. Paul VanPernis, for providing Dabney with exceptional care for the past 30+ years. Finally, the family is forever grateful to all her friends, who always asked about her and offered their support. May God bless you all as richly as he blessed her.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, in Glidden, on Thursday, March 13, 2008, beginning at 9 a.m., continuing until the hour of the service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 13, 2008, at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, in Glidden. Father Edward J. Hussli, will be the celebrant. The organist will be Judy Hauchild. Special music will include: ‘How Great Thou Art‘, ‘The Old Rugged Cross’ and ‘On Eagles’ Wings‘. The casket bearers will include: Joseph Wiener, Stephanie Wiener, David Joseph, Sarah Joseph, Katie Joseph, Samuel Joseph and Nicole Traczyk.

Einar A. ‘Al’ Josephson

Einar A. ‘Al’ Josephson, age 67, of Mellen, Wisconsin, passed away, peacefully, at his home in Cozy Valley, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

Al was born, on Easter Sunday, April 25, 1943, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the son of Einar A. and Alice (Tast) Josephson. He graduated from Ashland High School, with the class of 1961.  He and Ruth C. Koosmann were united in marriage, on September 28, 1968, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen.

They made their home in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, where Al worked for over 32 years, retiring in 2001. He was as a senior design draftsman at A.O. Smith Corp and then an employee of Tower Automotive. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving husband, dad and grandpa. He adored his family, especially his grandchildren, and never passed up a chance to buy a raffle ticket. His dry and subtle sense of humor will be missed.

Al is survived by Ruth, his wife of almost 42 years, of Cozy Valley; their son, Aaron (Khristi), of Brown Deer; daughter, Holly (Robert) DeGroot, of Phillips, Wisconsin; and grandchildren: Britta Josephson, Gus Josephson, Andrew DeGroot and Ryan DeGroot. Al is also survived by: his sister, Elaine (Paul) Kopp, of Washburn, Wisconsin and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents and one sister, Linda Josephson.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen and continue until the hour of service.

Dorothy M. Jurvelin

Dorothy M. Jurvelin, age 90, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center, in Ashland.

Dorothy was born on April 19, 1921, in Iron River, Wisconsin, the daughter of Elmer and Pauline (Marth) Warbalow. She and Edward C. Jurvelin were united in marriage, in Cloquet, Minnesota, on January 12, 1942. She was a homemaker and worked at the Brule Corporation, in Iron River, for over 18 years. She enjoyed ceramics, traveling and attending craft shows.

Survivors include: her sons: Edward V. Jurvelin, of Maple, Wisconsin; and Clifford (Mary) Jurvelin, of Markeson, Wisconsin; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; her brother, Vilas (Lorraine) Warbalow, of Minocqua, Wisconsin; her sister, Audrey (Dele) Allgood, of Marshfield, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Edward C. Jurvelin, on October 1, 2002; her parents; and her brother, Marvin Warbalow.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012, and continuing until the hour of service.

A Funeral Service, for Dorothy, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. Reverend Jean Oliver-Holder will officiate.

Janice M. Jusula

Janice M. Jusula, age 62, of 15470 Salter Drive, Hayward, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital in Hayward.

Jan was born, on September 5, 1947, in Marengo, Wisconsin, the daughter of Edward A. and Agnes B. (Graf) Sorel. She and Clifford C.  ‘Butch’ Jusula were united in marriage, in Mellen, Wisconsin, on August 26, 1967. Jan was a production supervisor, at Bee Hive Botanicals, in Hayward, for over ten years. She was an avid fisherperson, ice fishing in particular. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved very much.

Survivors include: Butch, her husband of 42 years; and their three children, Clint Jusula and his wife, Barb, of Mellen; Melinda Jusula and her fiancé, Randal Brabant, of Mellen; and Carleen Jackson and her husband, Matthew, of Hayward. Jan is also survived by: six grandchildren:  Jeremiah, Brooke, Angela, Charles, Ali and Torrence; two brothers: Edward Sorel and his wife, Lynette, of Mellen; and Robert Sorel, of Anchorage, Alaska; six sisters: Joyce McKay, of Mellen; Carol Nanninga and her husband, John, of Aurora, Illinois; Linda Butler and her husband, Roy, of Franklin Park, Illinois; Kathleen Jellich, of Anchorage; Rosemary Bay and her husband, Bernard, of Glidden, Wisconsin; and Constance Endres and her husband, Michael, of Anchorage; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Agnes Sorel.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen, and continue until the hour of service.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen. Father Gerald Hagen will be the celebrant. Special music will include ‘Amazing Grace’.

Her interment will be private.

Leona I. Jusula, age 82, of Mellen, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Leona was born, on March 30, 1926, in Highbridge, Wisconsin, the daughter of William and Helen (Kelly) Kruzan. She and Charles R. Jusula, were united in marriage, on June 17, 1944, in Ashland. A homemaker, she was also employed by the Munsingwear Company, in Ashland, and the Louisiana Pacific Plant, in Mellen.

Survivors include: her two sons: Clifford Jusula and his wife, Janice, of Hayward, Wisconsin; and Wade Jusula and his wife, Lisa, of Saxon, Wisconsin; her daughter, Joyce Neibauer and her husband, Mike, of Mellen; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Leona is also survived by: three brothers: Lloyd Kruzan, of Highbridge; Leonard Kruzan and his wife, Judy, of Wilmot, Wisconsin and James Kruzan and his wife, Arlene, of Theresa, Wisconsin; two sisters: Ida Larvey, of Mellen and Shirley Michel and her husband, Richard, of Mellen; numerous nieces and nephews.

Leona was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Helen; her husband, Charles, on February 14, 2001; eight brothers and sisters.

A visitation, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen, will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2009, and continue until the hour of the service.

Funeral services, for Leona Jusula, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen. Reverend Shawn W. Andersen will officiate. Casket bearers will include; Clint Jusula, Dane Jusula, Daryl Neibauer, Jeff Delegan, Luke Anderson and Matthew Jackson.

Interment, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Highbridge, will follow the service at the Church.

Eva A. Kacvinsky

Eva A. Kacvinsky, age 86, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, Wisconsin.

Eva was born, on November 25, 1922, in Benoit, Wisconsin, the daughter of John J. and Mary S. (Dobiash) Sopoci. She was united in marriage to John J. Kacvinsky, in Dauby, Wisconsin, on February 10, 1945. A homemaker, she also worked at the Ashland Dye Works, was a waitress at the Scottie Club, worked in the dietary dept at the Saint Joseph Hospital and the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, and cooked at Poncho’s Restaurant, in Cornucopia, Wisconsin, and the Wooden Nickel, in Ashland. She was a member of: the Moquah Homemakers and the First Catholic Slovak Union. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed: cooking, watching Brewers baseball games, fishing and polka music.

Survivors include: her two sons, Stephen Kacvinsky and his wife, Janis, of Washburn; William Kacvinsky and his wife, Deena, of Ashland; and three daughters: JoAnne Schacht and her husband, Dennis, of West Bend, Wisconsin; Diane Martens and her husband, Walter, of Cornucopia; Susan Sanders and her husband, Thomas, of Ashland. She is also survived by: eight grandchildren: Chris Martens, Angela Martens, Kim Martens, Pat Martens, Lori Dethorne, Scott Sanders, Timothy Sanders, Ryan Kacvinsky; two great-grandsons, Reid and Myles; one sister, Emily Nemec of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, John, on December 17, 1995; her parents, John and Mary Sopoci; three brothers: Tony Sopoci, John Sopoci, Joseph Sopoci; three sisters: Mary Gregor, Margaret Serio, Katherine Jarecki and one grandson, Kevin.

The visitation, from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2009, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland, will include a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M., will be the celebrant. Casket bearers will include: Kerry Sopoci, Larry Nemec, Jim Kacvinsky, Tom Kacvinsky, Ron Nemec and Dave Gregor.

Interment,in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, in Moquah, Wisconsin, will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2009.

Mary Carol ‘Tootie’ Kapusta

Mary Carol ‘Tootie’ Kapusta, age 77, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the Golden Living Center – Court Manor, in Ashland.

Mary was born, on July 13, 1933, in Mellen, Wisconsin, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Lucas) Fisher. She and Frank Kapusta were united in marriage, in Mellen, on July 28, 1951. She was a homemaker who enjoyed: gardening, fishing, baking and cooking her specialty ham and rollie pollie dinners. For many years, Mary’s greatest fulfillment was being a loving nanny for the children of relatives and friends, whom she thought of as her own.

Surviving Mary are: her son, Michael ‘Dixie; D. Kapusta, of Ashland; sisters: Agnes (John) Duesing, of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; Hattie Stricker, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and Nancy Fisher, of Seymour, Wisconsin; her brother, James (Kathy) Fisher, of St. George, Utah; a special niece, Debbie Bertelson, of Iron River, Wisconsin; her close friend, Melanie Jacobs, of Ashland; many special nieces and nephews that she loved very much.

Mary was preceded in death by: her husband, Frank, on January 23, 1984; one infant daughter, Marilyn K. Kapusta, in 1953; her parents; two sisters, Donna Hockmeyer and Betty Hein; and two brothers, William ’Bill’ and John ‘Huntz’ and a brother-in-law, Fred Stricker.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at 10a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland and continue until the hour of service.

Donna was born, on October 7, 1944, in Coupeville, Washington, the daughter of Donald and Ruth (Myrdahl) Clay. She and Leo S. Karaba were united in marriage, in Ashland, in 1979. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family.

Ruth E. Karaba

Ruth E. Karaba, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2001, in her Ashland, Wisconsin, home with her loving family at her side.

Ruth was born August 24, 1918, in Highbridge, Wisconsin, the daughter of Andrew J. and Myrtle (Woodward) Carbon. She and Steven J. Karaba were united in marriage, in Highbridge, on August 12, 1939. She was a homemaker who enjoyed: camping, boating, cooking and baking. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, whom she loved very much.

Survivors include: her daughters: Theresa (Walter) Stolarzyk, of Ashland; and Rita Shadow, of Woodville, Texas; sons: Gerald (Lorie), of Ashland; and Andrew (Jean), of Mikado, Michigan; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband Steven (on February 14, 2004); two sons: Thomas and Leo; one grandson, Thomas Karaba, Jr,; one great-grandson, Ryan Hanson; her parents; six brothers: Bart, Rudolph, Joseph, Glen, Francis and Kenneth; seven sisters: Cecilia, Mildred, Margaret, Katherine, Clara, Beatrice and Alice.

Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Kegel

Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Kegel, age 86, of 2322 Fifth Avenue East, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.

Elizabeth was born, on October 4, 1922, in Bourough of Shoreditch, London, England, the daughter of Thomas W. and Elizabeth (Wickham) Farmer. She survived the blitz, during WWII, worked in armaments factories, was a specialty seamstress, fire watcher and rainbow corner. She also met her future husband during the War, Walter Clarence ‘Bud’ Kegel, a dashing U.S. military man. They were united in marriage, in London, on July 21, 1945.

She came to the United States in 1946, where she was a homemaker. She worked as a nurses aid at Saint Joseph Hospital and over 20 years at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. She was a recipient of the ‘Bronze Medallion’ for swimming. She was a member of the school PTA, the VFW Auxiliary Guard. She was a member and past president of the Ladies Guild at Zion Lutheran Church and a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. She was a strong, loving, kind hearted, hard working wife, mother and nurses aide. She was the last in her family of a strong, loving and very patriotic generation. Her children were her life: she taught them to love, sing and face adversity, love the Lord: She was an all around classy lady.

Survivors include her eight Children: Dennis Kegel and his wife, Fran, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Michelle Karaba and her husband, Ed, of Apache Junction, Arizona; Brenda Johnson and her husband, Bill, of Mason, Wisconsin; Kevin Kegel and his wife, Pat, of Ashland; Robin Brady, of Ashland; Brian Kegel and his wife, Sue, of Ashland; Sandy Bourbeau and her husband, Bruce, of Sanborn, Wisconsin; Becky Gurske and her husband, Bob, of Ashland. She is also survived by twenty-two grand-children: Tom Kegel; Marcy Madsen and her husband, Dan; Kari Chance and her husband, Brandon; Jason Ericson; April Kitelinger and her husband, Eric; Vicki Craig and her husband, Carl; Billy Johnson; David Johnson and his wife, Athena; Laurie Bailey and her husband, Larry; Rob Karaba; Jim Karaba and his wife, Channe; Steve Kegel; Christine Kegel; Ed Brady and his wife, Becky; Shawn Brady and his wife, Missy; Matt Brady and his wife, Rachel; Angela Brady; Amie Hunt and her husband, Kevin; Danny Kegel; Walter Gurske; Douglas Gurske and Carolyn Gurske. Also surviving are: seventeen great-grandchildren: Tanner, Chase, Dara, Gracia, Lucas, Aiden, Ryan, Savanna, Victoria, Nichole, Christina, Audrey, Vincent, Nicholas, Donovan, Liam, Justin and three new babies due in the spring; numerous nieces and nephews in the United States, England and Australia.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Farmer; her husband, Bud, on Aug 20, 1980; brothers and sisters: Arthur Thomas ‘Tom’, Dorothy ‘Dolly’, Thomas ‘Towny’, Nellie ‘Nel’, Mathilda ‘Tilly’, Edward ‘Nutty’, Emily ‘Em’, Charles ‘Waggy’, and Jenny.

A gathering, for family and friends, will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2008, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, and continue until the hour of service.

William F. King, age 77, a resident of Mellen Manor Nursing Home, in Mellen, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

William was born, on October 8, 1931, in Peoria, Illinois, the son of William E. and Frieda (Veil) King. He served with the U. S. Airforce and was a Logistics Director within the Trucking Industry.

Charles Kleinsteiber, age 82, of 38887 Town Rod 62, Highbridge, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Mellen Manor, in Mellen, Wisconsin.

Charles was born, on August 28, 2009, in Highbridge, the son of John F. and Blanche L. (Binford) Kleinsteiber. Charles was a lifelong dairy farmer. He enjoyed the outdoors: hunting, fishing and gardening. He restored old tractors and with them participated in many area parades and other community events.

Survivors include: his two brothers: Kenneth Kleinsteiber, of Highbridge; and Ralph Kleinsteiber and his wife, Anita, of Highbridge; one sister, Florence Blahnik and her husband, Thomas, of Washburn, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, John and Blanche Kleinsteiber; one brother, John Kleinsteiber, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Jessie Kleinsteiber and a great niece, Jamie Kleinsteiber.

Ialene C. Knoll

Ialene C. Knoll, age 95, of East Bennett Street, Mellen, Wisconsin, died Friday, January 4, 2008, at the Mellen Manor, in Mellen.

Ialene was born, on May 2, 1912, in Cayuga, Wisconsin, the daughter of Alton and Charlette (Cook) Lighter. At a young age, Ialene played many roles in her parents’ Orpheum Theater. She began as an usher, and later planned and played the piano and organ accompaniment for the silent movies. She was the secretary/treasurer for her class at Mellen High School, and was the valedictorian of the class of 1929.

After graduating from the Chicago Normal School of Physical Education, in 1931, she attended Northland College, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota and Quincy College.

She was united in marriage to Joseph P. Knoll, in Duluth, Minnesota, on December 18, 1934. AFter Joe’s death, in 1952, she managed Knoll Lumber and Fuel, for six years.

She was the first woman physical education teacher at Mellen Public School (1954 to 1958); the director of home life at Good Samaritan Home, in Quincy, Illinois, for 19 years; and a Church youth councilor for Green Lake and Moon Beach camps, for nine summers.

Ialene enjoyed travels to: Europe, Central and South America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Greece and Alaska. Many of these were church-sponsored mission tours.

She was a lifelong member of the Congregation United Church of Christ, in Mellen, taught Sunday School, for 10 years, and was a member of the Church auxiliary and ladies aid. Her volunteer works included: Sunburst Youth Home, in Neilsville, Wisconsin; Father Beiting’s Christian Appalachian Project, in Berea, Kentucky; Meals on Wheels, in Alpine, California; Memorial Medical Center and Regional Hospice, in Ashland. Organizations, in Mellen, to which she belonged include: Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Chamber of Commerce, the Senior Center, the Literacy Program and Ashland County Nutrition Program.

Survivors include: her son, Kirk A. Knoll, of Mellen; three grandchildren: Michael Knoll and his wife, Eve, Jason Knoll, and Kara Knoll and one great granddaughter, Breanna Knoll.

Ialene was preceded in death by: her parents, Alton and Charlette; her husband, Joseph P. Knoll, Sr., in 1952, and their son, Joseph P. Knoll, Jr.

A memorial service, to celebrate her life, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2008, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen. Reverend James Imse will officiate.

Her private interment, in the Mellen Union Cemetery, will immediately precede the service at the Church.

Maxine Martha Koehn

Maxine Martha Koehn, age 89, of 619 17th Avenue West, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Saturday, October 24, 2009.
Max was born, on August 18, 1920, in Casper, Wyoming, the daughter of Thomas Patrick and Gertrude Cecilia (Monteaux) McGuire. She and Frank Joseph Koehn were united in marriage, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, on August 30, 1942.

She taught school in various communities in Wisconsin, notably: Marinette, White Lake and Glidden. Her hobbies included gardening.

Survivors include her two sons: Bruce Koehn, of Wausau, Wisconsin and Frank Koehn and his wife, Lois, of Herbster, Wisconsin; two grandsons: Gus and Guy, and a special nephew, Tim McGuire.

Max was preceded in death by: her husband, Frank Koehn (1977), her parents, Thomas and Gertrude McGuire and her two brothers: Jim McGuire and Tim McGuire.

Laverne M. ‘Verne’ Koeller

Laverne M. ‘Verne’ Koeller, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010, at the Saint Luke’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota.

Verne was born, on December 8, 1931, in Clintonville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bernard and Gertrude (Dahm) Hogan. She and Arlyn A. ‘Joe’ Koeller were united in marriage, at Clintonville, Wisconsin, on August 30, 1952. She was a homemaker and owned and operated Creative Ceramics in Ashland for 25 years. The coffee pot was always on and her ceramic shop became a gathering place for many of the ladies of Ashland whether doing ceramics or not.

She was always willing to help others in any way she could and in death continued to do so by being an organ donor. Her credo was Faith, Family and Friends, she lived it every day. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, whom she loved very much.

Survivors include: Arlyn “Joe” A. Koeller, M.D., her husband of 57 years, of Ashland; children: Jeffrey (Rita) of Lynnwood, Washington; Gregory (Hilary) of Bergen, Norway; Timothy, of New Richmond, Wisconsin; and Mary Kay (Paul) Bates, of Duluth, MN; two grandchildren: Samuel and Dakota; two brothers: Donald Hogan, of Appleton, Wisconsin; and Douglas Hogan, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two sisters: Delores Quiroz, of San Diego, California; and Darlene (Gordon) Taylor, of Madison, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Marge Govin, of Ashland.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, four brothers: Eugene, Father LeRoy, Thomas and John Hogan.

A private memorial service, for Verne, was held in the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. Father Paul Pare’, O.F.M., officiated at the 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, service. Special music, ‘Vaaren’ by Edvard Grieg, was performed by Gregory Koeller and Hilary Foster. Other selected hymns were played: ‘Come to The Water’, ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Let There Be Peace On Earth’, and ‘Sing To The Mountains’.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, for Verne, will take place, at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 10, 2010, in the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. Special music, ‘Vaaren’ by Edvard Grieg, will be performed by Gregory Koeller and Hilary Foster. Anne P. Kohl, age 92, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center in Ashland.

Anne was born, on March 8, 1918, in Keewatin, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Barbara (Capan) Klucarich. She and Joseph J. Kohl were united in marriage, in Ashland, on September 16, 1939. She was a homemaker; a member of the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland; and a member of the Church choir, for over 35 years. She was a seamstress and enjoyed: traveling, square dancing, embroidering, crocheting, cross country skiing and caring for her family.

Survivors include: her sons, Errol (Linda), of Douglas, Kansas; Stephen (Linda), of Poynette, Wisconsin; and Robert (Val), of Ashland; and her daughters: Barbara Teague, of Ashland; Rosemary (Michael Canter) Kohl, of Alameda, California; Joanne (Glenn) Hurlburt, of Ashland; and Janet (Nick Gervino) Kohl, of Ashland. Anne is also survived by: eleven grandchildren: J.V. Teague, April Gibson, Georgia Teague, Scott Kohl, Paul Kohl, Steven Kohl, Sara Freiling, Eric Kohl, Christopher Kohl, Elizabeth Kohl and David Hurlburt; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Other survivors include: two brothers: Joe (Rose) Klucarich, of Brown Deer, Wisconsin; and John (Norma) Klucarich, of Elcho, Wisconsin; three sisters: Mary Wallner, of Ashland; Katherine Romaine, of Denver, Colorado; and Rose Drndak, of Kenosha, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

Anne was preceded in death by: her husband, Joe (on February 13, 2010); and her parents.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, and continue until the hour of service.

Joseph J. ‘Joe’ Kohl

Joseph J. ‘Joe’ Kohl, age 92, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center, in Ashland.

Joe was born, on November 12, 1916, in Ashland, the son of Joseph and Anna (Swander) Kohl. He served with the U.S. Army, during WWII, and was in the U.S. Coast Guard.  He and Anne P. Klucarich were united in marriage, in Ashland, on September 16, 1939. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, cross country skiing, square dancing with the Squaranders, and hiking. He was a member of the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. He was an ore puncher, for Northwestern Railroad, for several years, and an ironworker for over 25 years.

Survivors include: Anne,  his wife of over 70 years; of Ashland; their three sons: Errol Kohl and his wife, Linda, of Douglas, Kansas: Stephen Kohl and his wife, Linda, of Poynette, Wisconsin; and Robert Kohl and his wife, Val, of Ashland; and four daughters: Barbara Teague of Ashland; Rosemary Kohl and her husband, Michael, Kohl of Alameda, California; Joanne Hurlburt and her husband, Glenn, of Ashland; and Janet Kohl of Ashland. Joe is also survived by: ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren; his brother, Francis Kohl, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two sisters: Agnes Wenzel, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Theresa Houtary and her husband, Harvey, of Ketchikan, Alaska; several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers: Leonard Kohl and Father Robert Kohl; and one sister, Cecilia Wollan.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, beginning at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2010, and continuing until the hour of the service.

LaVerne A. Kolberg

LaVerne A. Kolberg, age 83, formerly of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2011, in the Provena Saint Anne Center, in Rockford, Illinois.

LaVerne was born, on April 21, 1927, in Hibbing, Minnesota, the first child of Romain D. and Helen M. (Roy) Provost. She grew up in Sanborn, Wisconsin, and then Ashland; graduating from Ashland High School in 1944. She worked as payroll clerk for Wisconsin Power and Light, in Ashland, for a number of years. She and Robert Kolberg were united in marriage, in Ashland, on Dec 27, 1948. She was a loving: mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children: Lynne Seppelfrick, of Oswego, Illinois; Cheryl Kolberg, of Rockford; and Curt (Kathleen), of Mosinee, Wisconsin; four grandchildren: John (Jennifer) Seppelfrick, Andrea (Ruben) Delgado, Kyle Kolberg and Michelle (Mick) Perry; and seven great-grandchildren: Kaden & Grant Seppelfrick, Zachary Delgado, Heaven, Kayla, Anna & Shannon Perry. LaVerne is also survived by: four sisters: Jeanette (Harold) Patzer, of Peoria, Arizona; Louise Lindsey, of Williamsburg, West Virginia; Doris (Robert) Kontny, of Ashland; and Carol LePlavy, of Ashland; one brother, Rodger (Sally) Provost, of Ashland; one brother-in-law, Chuck (Virgi) Buscher, of Cloquet, Minnesota; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; special dear friends: Chuck and Shirley Powell.

LaVerne was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert; her parents; her brothers: Roy and Gary; her sister-in-law, Jean Buscher and brothers-in-law: Ted Lindsey and James LePlavy.

Chester T. Kontny

Chester T. Kontny, age 77, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died Monday, January 21, 2008, at the Golden Living Center – Court Manor, in Ashland.

Chester was born, On April 20, 1930, in Ashland, the son of Joseph L. and Agnes (Daniels) Kontny. He was an able bodied seaman for various steam ship lines, for over forty years, a vocation he enjoyed very much. He and Alberta M. Kelly were united in marriage, in Ashland, on April 19, 1986. He had many friends, at the Golden Living Center – Court Manor, and will be missed by all of them, especially Rita.

Survivors include: his two brothers: Robert Kontny and his wife, Doris, of Ashland and Joseph Kontny and his wife, Ike, of Wichita, Kansas; one sister in law, Geraldine Kontny of Ashland and many nieces and nephews.

Chester was preceded in death by: his parents, JOseph and Agnes; his wife, Alberta, on February 5, 2000, and three brothers: Richard Kontny, Edward Kontny and Raymond Kontny.

Robert J. ‘Bubba’ Kontny, age 77, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in his Ashland, Wisconsin, home, with his loving family near his side.

Bob was born on January 5, 1934, in Ashland, the son of Joseph L. and Agnes (Daniels) Kontny. In 1952, he graduated from DePadua High School, in Ashland. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War (1953 to 1956). He and Doris H. Provost were united in marriage, in Ashland, on February 20, 1960. He worked for Cleveland Cliffs on the Great Lakes for over 30 years. He was a member of the United Chequamegon Area Veterans and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, and was an avid Packers fan.

Survivors include: Doris, his wife of 51 years, of Ashland; children: Brian R. (Linda Braun), of Ashland; Karen M. (Paul) Carlson, of Appleton, Wisconsin; and Larry J. (Janelle), of Ashland; and grandchildren: Staci, Megan and Stephanie Carlson, Lacy, Samantha, Nichole and Eric Kontny. Bob is also survived by: his brother: Joseph (Aya) Kontny, of Kansas City, Kansas; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents and four brothers: Edward, Raymond, Richard and Chester.

Jason W. Koosmann, age 35, of 74467 State Highway 77, Mellen, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Jason was born, on December 19, 1972, in Ashland, the son of Norbert W. and Joyce A. (Sarri) Koosmann. He graduated from Mellen High School, in 1992. He enjoyed: ATVing, hunting and spending time at ‘Camp Redneck’ with: his dad, brothers and nephews. He was very good natured and his laughter was contagious. He would help anyone at anytime with anything. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Mellen.

Survivors include: his parents, Norbert and Joyce Koosmann, of Mellen; two brothers: Glenn Koosmann and his wife, Sherri, of Port Edwards, Wisconsin; and Kevin Koosman and is wife, Rhonda, of Mosinee, Wisconsin; and three sisters: Diana Weisenberger and her husband, Terry, of Hatley, Wisconsin; Lorna Grande and her husband, John, Jr., of Mosinee and Wanda Bernett and her husband, Mark, of East Troy, Wisconsin. He is also survived by: many nieces and nephews, one grand niece, one grand nephew, many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by: his grandparents and niece, Melissa.

Marian K. Koski

Marian K. Koski, age 95 of Ashland, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Golden Living Center – Court Manor in Ashland.

Marian was born, on June 10, 1913, in Bay City, Michigan, the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Stemmal) Flisek. At an early age Marian and her family moved to farmland near Benoit, Wisconsin. She married Edwin Koski, in Ashland. She was a beautician most of her adult life, and owned her own beauty shop, in Ashland, for over 50 years.

She loved to play cards. A member and long time president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, she enjoyed participated in their various activities, and was the Jolly Elf at their Christmas parties, for many years. She enjoyed growing flowers and gardening.

Survivors include: her three nephews, two nieces, numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Frank and Josephine; husband, Ed; her brother, John Flisek; and sisters: Josephine Nemetz, Ida Clamenti, Ann Duclon and Rosemary Johnson; and her nephew, Donald Duclon.

A visitation, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, and continue until the hour of the service. Per Marian’s request, her casket will be closed.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Marian, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland. Father Paul Paré will be the celebrant.

Rose M. Kriskovich

Rose M. Kriskovich, age 93, of Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center, in Ashland.

Rose was born, on December 20, 1916, in Mason, Wisconsin, the daughter of Yvonna (Kalafitch) and Blaze Tody, Sr. She and Joseph S. Kriskovich were united in marriage, in Sanborn, Wisconsin, on November 20, 1937. Rose and Joe operated a dairy farm, now under the supervision of their son, Tom, and his wife, Donna.

Joe, with Rose’s assistance, was the treasurer for the Town of White River, for 27 years. Rose was an active member of Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, in Sanborn, and was instrumental in much of the progress it made throughout the years.

She taught upholstery classes at Ashland Vocational School, in Ashland, and Croatian ethnic cooking and baking at Northland College, in Ashland.

The time spent as a charter member of the Sanborn Community Granny Quilters Club, was near to her heart. They made sleeping bags, baby clothes and quilts that were sent to third world countries. Rose was the neighborhood seamstress: she made wedding dresses, repaired clothing of all types and made alterations. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she loved very much.

Rose is survived by her loving children: Dean Kriskovich and his wife, Patricia, of Indianapolis, Indiana; Thomas Kriskovich and his wife, Donna, of Sanborn; Diane Kriskovich, of Denver, Colorado; and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Kriskovich-Rackley, of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Other survivors include: fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; her brother, Blaze Tody, Jr. and his wife, Josie, of Ashland; two sisters: Zora Eid, of Marengo, Wisconsin; and Ann Campbell, of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Joe (on October 30, 1998); their son, David; three brothers: Victor, Anton and Steve; two sisters: Marjorie Kurilla and Mary Tadevich; and her parents, Yvonne and Blaze Tody,  Sr.

Terry L. Krupp

Terry L. Krupp, age 61, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home in Mellen, Wisconsin, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family at his bedside.

Terry was born on June 6, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Herman H. and Ruth H. (Roeder) Krupp. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He and Kathryn J. Majeski were united in marriage, on June 11, 1982, in Milwaukee. For eight years he was a leadman for H Window, in Ashland, Wisconsin. He enjoyed gardening, his dogs ‘Sophie’ and ‘Mousiemae’, but he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, Kathy, of Mellen; his son, Jason (Jamie) Majeski, of Mellen; and three grandchildren: Jaylynn, Jordyn and Jaxtyn. Terry is also survived by: his brother, Dan (Sheri) Krupp, of West Bend, Wisconsin; his sister, Ronnie (Peter) Martin, of Westfield, Wisconsin; an aunt, Juanita Roeder, of Mellen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Per Terry’s wishes, cremation will take place with no formal services at this time.

Tom was born, on March 25, 1945, in Highbridge, Wisconsin, the son of Allen A. and Agnes E. (Larvey) Kruzan. He and Mary Jane Stricker, were united in marriage from 1965 until 1981. He was a logger most of his life. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching Nascar.

Survivors include: his son, Arlen Kruzan and his wife, Eva, of Highbridge; two daughters: Marla Kruzan and her husband, Mike Roy, of Mellen; and Angel Dearing and her husband, James, of North Carolina; and the mother of his children, Mary Jane. Tom is also survived by: six grandchildren: Heather, Heidi, Samantha, Lakyn, Taleah, and Thomas; one great-grandson, Caleb; his brother, Jack Kruzan and his wife, Kathleen, of Highbridge; four sisters:

Ramona Ellias and her husband, Chuck, of Mellen; Charlotte Vitek and her husband, LeRoy, of Superior, Wisconsin; Kathy Stricker and her husband, Kieth, of Highbridge; and Dolly Watson, of Mellen; many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers: Richard and Laverne and his sister, Gladys.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen, beginning at 9:30 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2009, and continuing until the hour of service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2009, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Mellen. Father Michael McLain will be the celebrant. Casket bearers will include: Arlen Kruzan, Jack Kruzan, Butch Jusula, Kieth Stricker, Kerry Vitek and Tim Kruzan.

The interment will be private.

Todd Kruzan

Todd Kruzan, age 49, of 107 Kritz Place, Mellen, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Todd was born, on July 24, 1959, in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Lloyd E. and Dorothy A. (Gilman) Kruzan. He graduated from Mellen High School, with the class of 1977, and lived most of his life in Mellen. He enjoyed decorating his home and working in his yard and flower garden. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include: his father, Lloyd Kruzan, of Highbridge, Wisconsin; one sister, Denise Schutte and her husband, Earl, of Highbridge; three brothers: Kevin Kruzan and his wife, Debbie, of Moore, Oklahoma; Darren Kruzan of Duluth, Minnesota; and Steve Cries and his wife, Kathy, of Oregon, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Kruzan, in 1982.

A visitation, for family and friends, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen, will begin at 12:00 noon, Monday, January 26, 2009, and continue until the hour of service.

Funeral services, for Todd Kruzan, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, in Mellen. The Reverend James Imse will officiate. Casket bearers will include: Kevin Kruzan, Ryan Schutte, Kendal Schutte, Jeremy Piff, Earl Schutte and Clint Jusula.

Interment, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Highbridge, Wisconsin, will take place, at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Frank E. Kucinski

Frank E. Kucinski, age 89, of 213 15th Avenue East, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at his residence, with his wife at his side.

Frank was born, on October 10 , 1918, in Ashland, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Przekop) Kucinski. He and Alberta F. Martin were united in marriage, in Ashland, on April 29, 1939.

During World War II, as a member of the United States Navy, he rose to the rank of carpenter’s mate second class. He sailed the Great Lakes for a number of years, later spending over 40 years as an employee of American Can, in Ashland.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member, until its closing, of the Holy Family Catholic Church, in Ashland, and was, for the remainder of his life, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Frank was also a member of the United Chequamegon Area Veterans.

He loved his garden and spent many hours tending and caring for its growth. Many people, in the area, enjoyed the fruits of his labor and marveled at not only the size of the garden itself, but the size, quality and quantity of the produce. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Survivors include: Alberta, his wife of 69 years; their children: Edward Kucinski and his wife, Alicia, of Pella, Iowa; Karen Thompson and her husband, Russ, of Brighton, Colorado; Lucy Blake, of Roseville, Minnesota; and David Kucinski, of Panama City, Florida; eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by: one brother, Tony Kucinski; one sister, Genevieve; a special nephew, Tom Kucinski and his wife, Diane, and several other nieces and nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by: his parents, Joseph and Josephine Kucinski; two granddaughters: Cassie and Colleen; one sister, Helen and an infant brother.

Visitation, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland, will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008, and continue until the hour of the service.

Funeral services, for Frank Kucinski, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland. Father Frank Folino, O.F.M., will officiate. Casket bearers will include: Brandon Blake, Patrick Blake, Ryan Blake and Thomas Blake.

Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, in Ashland, will follow the service at the Funeral Home. Military honors will be performed by the United Chequamegon Area Veterans.

William Kucinski

William Kucinski, age 91, of 306 5th Avenue East, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Forest Haven Assisted Living, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Bill was born, on January 2, 1918, in Ashland, the son of Anton and Mary Kucinski, proud residents of the East End of Ashland. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, and served in WWII with the 3rd Infantry in: North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. He was wounded, near the German border, in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star and received a Purple Heart.

He and Genevieve C. Starkman, the daughter of Ambrose and Genefafa Starkman, were united in marriage on April 5, 1945. A couple since 1935, Bill and Gen lived at 306 Fifth Avenue East for more than five decades. ‘Billy K’ was a partsman in Ashland for more than 30 years at: S&S Parts, Larson/Buick/Pontiac, Wallie Motors and General Trading. As a young man, his jobs included: delivering moonshine to local blind pigs, setting pins at the bowling alley and valeting cars for Ashland’s elite in the 1930’s. He was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland, served as parish trustee and council member, and organized numerous Church fund raisers. Bill rarely sat still. He could fix anything, talk to anyone, and was always quick with a remark or a joke.

He will be forever missed by: Genevieve, his wife of nearly 64 years; their daughter, Jeanne Poole and her husband, Jeff, of Toledo, Ohio; and sons, John Kucinski of River Fall, Wisconsin, James Kucinski and his wife, Sandy, Dan Kucinski and David Kucinski, all of Ashland. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Julie of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Becky of Ashland and Ken, Lisa and Billy. of River Falls.

Bill was preceded in death by: his parents, Anton and Mary and his sisters: Jennie Kucinski, Veronica Kucinski, Pauline Paulding, Dorothy Ante, Mary Roguski and Irene Carlson.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the Our Lady of the Lake Cathloic Church, in Ashland, and continue until the hour of service.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Bill, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland. Father Henry V. Dorothy M. Kugler

Dorothy M. Kugler, age 87, a longtime resident of Ashland, Wisconsin, died on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at the Northern Lights Health Care Center, in Washburn, Wisconsin, where she had resided since 2005.

Dorothy, the youngest and last living member of the John and Elizabeth Gautsch family, was born in the Town of Russell, Wisconsin, on October 4, 1922. Her early years were spent living in the stone house built by her father, and attending the Carver School.

One of her fondest memories was of riding in a wagon, with her mother, to deliver a new bell to the Carver School. In 1964 she was able to purchase that bell, when it was put up for sale. For years, Dorothy kept and cherished the bell. Her dream was to some day have it returned to the Town of Russell. The Carver School bell is now back there and stands as part of the legacy of a woman who loved her years at the Carver School.

Dorothy’s strong spirit and determination became evident after her graduation from the Carver School. Mourning the recent death of her mother, Dorothy managed to convince her dad that she could move to Ashland, take care of herself, and get a high school education. She soon found a job working at a boarding house for her room and board. It was a very tough struggle for a young girl completely on her own, but she did not give up as she completed her high school education.

Dorothy’s life was filled with one adventure after another. From her years of work at the Quality Bakery and Stanley’s Department Store to her years of having garage sales – life was never dull! She loved: writing, talking, reading, visiting friends and relatives, and discussing politics. Helping people who were in need was her passion.

Her last years were spent at the Northern Lights Health Care Center. The family will always hold a special place in our hearts for the staff and residents.

Dorothy was preceded in death by: her husband, Vernon; parents, John and Elizabeth Gautsch; brothers: Leonard, Ervin and Ted; sisters: Elizabeth, Margaret, Amey, and Jenny.

Survivors include: her daughters: Sharon Pohjonen and her husband, Jerry, of Duluth, Minnesota; and Liella Bay, of Ashland; granddaughter, Cheryl DiAmore and her husband, Mike, of Guam; great grandchildren: Nicholas, Angela, and Matthew DiAmore; nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service was held, at 9 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. Reverend Kent Seldal officiated. Interment, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Ashland, followed the service.

Our Ashland Chapel will be assisting Dorothy’s family with her memorialization, although the details have not yet been finalized.

Genevieve E. ‘Jean’ Kull

Genevieve E. ‘Jean’ Kull, age 88, of 816 5th Ave East, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Thursday, November 27, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.

Jean was born, on February 4, 1920, in Ashland, the daughter of August W. and Margaret E. (Gonia) Maebius. She graduated from DePadua High School, in Ashland, and attended Ashland County Normal.

Jean and Cleon A. Kull were united in marriage, in Chicago, Illinois, on November 28, 1942. She was a homemaker, a teacher and had worked at Lake Superior District Power Company. She loved to read and shop.

Survivors include: her son, Thomas Kull and his wife, Maryann, of Crystal Lake, Illinois; and three daughters: Margaret ‘Peggy’ Coleman, of Ashland; Alice Watkins, of Belton, Texas; and Grace Kostroski and her husband, Alan, of Oconomowac, Wisconsin. She was also survived by: ten grandchildren: Joanna, Tina, Michael, Malena, Shawn, Margaret, Erin, Steven, Mary and Katie; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, August and Margaret Maebius; her husband, Cleon Kull, on April 12, 1998; two brothers, Sydney and Harland Maebius; two sisters, Grace Dorin and Alice Maebius; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Coleman and her son-in-law, Jim Coleman.

A visitation, at Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, November 30, 2008, and feature a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Jean, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Frank Folino, O.F.M., will be the celebrant. Her casket bearers will include: Gene Brinker, Geno Brinker, Bill Brinker, Bernie Brinker, Mike Brinker, Chris Brinker, Bob Belsky and David Brinker.

Interment, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, will follow the mass.

Shirley Ann ‘Perry’ Kupczyk

Shirley Ann ‘Perry’ Kupczyk, age 79, of 1500 East Fifth Street, Ashland, Wisconsin, died in her home, on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

Perry was born, on November 11, 2009, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the daughter of Nicholas Paul and Loretta Elizabeth (Hruska) Kupczyk. She graduated from Depadua High School, in Ashland. She was a seamstress, at the Munsingwear Company, in Ashland, for 43 years.

Perry enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, going to area fish fries, meeting her Munsingwear buddies for breakfast and watching the Green Bay Packers, but her greatest joy was attending the ball games of her nieces and nephews..

Perry is survived by: her two brothers: Donald Kupczyk and his wife, Ethel, of Ashland and Peter Kupczyk, of Florida; and her two sisters: Jean Ronning, of Ashland; and Joyce Carlson and her husband, Yunko, of Ashland. She was an extra special aunt to: Kelly, Kara, Brandon, Kaitlyn, Jacob and Dylan as well as the other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by: 24 great nieces and nephews; and 17 great great nieces and nephews.

Perry was preceded in death by: her parents, Nicholas and Loretta Kupczyk, and her sister, Lois Croteau.

A visitation, for family and friends, will begin at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 24, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, and continue until the hour of the service

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, for Perry, at 11 a.m., Thursday, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Henry V. Willenborg, O.F.M., will be the celebrant. Dawn Swanson will be the organist. Special Music will include ‘You Are The Wind Beneath My Wings’.
