John (Jack) O’Brien

On November 22, 2009, John (Jack) O’Brien, 57, left this life to watch over his nephew, Jeff Offer and his niece, Kym Fox, who preceded him in death, and to be with his mother and father, Ann and Randall O’Brien, and his two baby sisters, Mary and Mary Clarice.

Jack was born in and lived in Ashland, leaving only to attend UW-Stevens Point where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree with a triple major in psychology, sociology, and anthropology.  He returned to Ashland in 1976 as the owner and operator of The Stagecoach Inn.  In reality, Jack also holds a Ph.D in psychology from UW-Stagecoach, where he spent over thirty wonderful years with his Stagecoach family.

Jack was a loyal and loving brother, brother-in-law, and uncle.  Jack is survived by his second family, his siblings, Pat Offer of Madison, WI,  Scherrie (Toby) Moris of Milwaukee, WI,  Judi (Earl) Anderson of Springfield, IL, Toni (Marlene) O’Brien of Marinette, WI, Joe (Amy) O’Brien of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Mike (Julie) O’Brien of Eau Claire, WI and Geri “Nuffy” O’Brien of West Bend, WI; his nieces Holly Hansen, Eryn Moris, Nicole Anderson, Kaitlin O’Brien, Laura Langley, Erin (Greg) Ludick; his nephews Gregg (Aleesha) Offer, Thad (Leah) Moris, Matt O’Brien; and many great nieces and nephews.

The O’Brien siblings concede that we are Jack’s second family.  To his Stagecoach family – we can only tell you how proud we are that our brother was such a great person for so many of you.  We are humbled by his compassion and humor, but most of all, his charitable heart.  Jack’s legacy was captured in his last few days with your letters, phone calls, visits, and statements of tearful love.  Thank you.  Very special thanks and love go to Erin and Ray.

Jack was a bartender/psychologist extraordinaire.  He listened with care and compassion and when he finally spoke he was calm and soothing, like listening to a great Irish tenor.  As many told us, Jack was a life mentor.

A gathering of family and friends honoring Jack’s life will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. with a family sharing time at 7:30 on Friday, Nov 27, 2009 at the Mountain Funeral Home in Ashland.
