Edith Christine Powers

Edith Christine Powers, age 94, was called home to be with the Lord, on Monday, September 5, 2011, at the Oaks Assisted Living Center, in Washburn, Wisconsin. Edith was born on July 16, 1917, in Ashland, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Hilda (Hedstrom) Westman. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1935.

Growing up in Ashland, she remembered caddying at the Elks Golf Course (when the boys in town were on strike) and riding in a barnstorming bi-plane high over the bay. During the summer she picked strawberries in Bayfield, where she met the handsome redhead, Orville Powers, who was later to become her husband. She worked for her father, in Westman’s Paint Store, for many years.

Orville and Edith eloped in Cloquet, Minnesota, on July 2, 1940. They lived in Bayfield, Wisconsin, where Orville was a commercial fisherman. While their children were very young, they spent the summers on Stockton Island, where Orville had built a cabin at the fish camp, where other fisherman also had cabins. A boat would come weekly, from Bayfield, to pick up the fish that the fisherman had caught. The boat also brought ice, groceries and mail to the families on Stockton. With no electricity, Edith spent her days taking care of the kids, washing clothes in a hand washtub and preparing meals on a white gas stove. Edith and the kids enjoyed hiking across to Julian Bay, swimming and picking blueberries. Over the years, Edith knitted a lot of sweaters, mittens and ‘thousands’ of slippers. Every Christmas, we all received a pair of slippers and a box of Crackerjacks.

Orville and Edith, with several other families, were instrumental in starting the Faith Baptist Church, in Bayfield. Edith was the Church’s pianist, financial secretary and worked in Children’s Church for many years. They lived between the Church and the parsonage, so they were always very involved in the Pastors’ and their families’ lives. Edith did a lot of babysitting, brought meals, had company over and was always a good friend.

In the 1970’s, they bought a 29’ sailboat (The Blitzen) and spent a lot of time sailing around the Apostle Islands and even took their boat all the way up the Saint Lawrence Seaway and through the locks. After they sold the Blitzen, they bought a camper and took several trips to Arizona, Colorado, California, as well as trips around the area. Orville and Edith were a great couple, always having fun and just enjoying being together.

Edith is survived by: three of her children: Connie (Myron) Leafblad, of Riverside, California; John (Gerry) Powers, of Washburn; and Kathleen Defoe, of Bayfield; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Orville, on October 19, 1999; her daughter, Sandra Joyce Maher; her parents; and her seven brothers and sisters.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Faith Baptist Church, in Bayfield, beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2011, and continuing until the hour of the service.
