ABOUT SENDING FLOWERS People are often uncertain how to express their concern or show their sympathy when a death occurs. Sending flowers is one way to help comfort the family and let them know you are thinking of them. It is also an opportunity to pay tribute to the deceased. Flowers have traditionally been sent to the funeral home for display during the visitation and funeral. They may also be sent to a gathering, memorial service or the family’s home in the weeks following the memorial events.
When choosing flowers to honor a friend or loved one, ask yourself “What was their favorite flower?” or “What were their favorite colors?” Sending personalized sympathy floral tributes are a growing trend. For example, fishing poles and lures can be creatively added to a floral arrangement for an avid fisherman. Film and photographs can be woven into a wreath for someone whose passion was photography. Anything is possible.
When ordering your floral tribute, tell the florist about the person you are honoring so that they can help you create a meaningful and memorable arrangement.
TYPES OF FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS While anything is possible when it comes to floral arrangements, florists commonly use the following designs for sympathy arrangements.
A casket spray (sometimes known as a casket blanket or cover) is the arrangement placed on the top of the casket. The family closest to the deceased is traditionally responsible for this selecting a casket spray.
A spray can vary in shape and size and are usually displayed on an easel. The flowers are designed for viewing from one side only.
An inside piece (sometimes known as an insert piece) is the term used to describe the small floral designs placed inside the casket (for example, pillows, hearts or small bouquets). Close family members or special loved ones usually order this type of arrangement. We recommend that you ask the family before ordering anything for the casket.
A wreath is circular in design and considered by many to symbolize eternal life.
A floral arrangement (or side piece) is a mix of fresh flowers in a vase, basket or other container.
Other floral designs can represent an organizational tribute (for example, a Masonic lodge) or a religious tribute for example, a cross). Heart-shaped designs are also quite popular.
Plants are longer lasting tributes that the family can keep after the service.
